The Activity of Bronislaw Grabczewski and Francis Edward Younghusband in the Background of the Russian-British Rivalry in Central Asia 1885-1896

Praca przedstawia postaci Bronisława Grąbczewskiego, Polaka na służbie Imperium Rosyjskiego i Francisa Edwarda Younghusbanda, brytyjskiego oficera służącego w wojskach British Raj. Obaj byli podróżnikami, którzy swoją pasję do wypraw łączyli z zadaniami wywiadowczymi na rzecz swoich imperiów, biorących udział w tzw. Wielkiej Grze (rosyjsko-brytyjskiej rywalizacji o wpływy w Azji Środkowej). Oprócz przedstawienia działalności obu oficerów w tej części świata w latach osiemdziesiątych i dziewięćdziesiątych XIX wieku, praca porównuje postaci obu podróżników pod względem ich osobowości, środowisk rodzinnych, sposobu organizacji wypraw i stosunku do Azjatów. Rozprawa stanowi opis jednej z odsłon Wielkiej Gry, która prezentowana jest tutaj z perspektywy jej dwóch uczestników, walczących po przeciwnych stronach. Dodatkowo, zaprezentowana jest tutaj krótka historia państw i regionów, które stały się przedmiotami w tej imperialnej rozgrywce.

The disertation presents Bronislaw Grabczewski, Pole who was on the Russian Empire’s service and Francis Edward Younghusband, British officer who served in the Indian Army. Both of them were the travelers who coupled their passion to expedition with the realization of the tasks for their own empires which participated in the Great Game (Russian-British rivalry for the influences in Central Asia). In this dissertation there is presented not only the activity of both officers in this part of world in 80ties and 90ties 19th century, but also it compares the Grabczewski’s and Younghusband’s characters (personality, the family environments, the way of organization of the excursions and they attitude to Asiatic native peoples). The dissertation is the description of one of the part of the Great Game, which is presented here from the outlook of two participants who struggled against each other. Additionally, here is presented the historical outline of states and regions which became the subjects in this imperial game.
