Graphemic Etymology of Sino-Japanese Characters. Analysis of Selected Examples

Celem pracy jest ukazanie zależności pomiędzy znaczeniem wybranych ideogramów sinojapońskich, a znaczeniem semantycznych komponentów bushu, nazywanych też kluczami. Skupię się na trzech kluczach, które przeszły relatywnie małe zmiany od czasu powstania jako proste piktogramy i mają mocny związek z obecnym znaczeniem ideogramów, w obrębie których występują. Pracę zacznę od krótkiego omówienia najważniejszych etapów rozwoju ideogramów, aby nakreślić tło dla ich dzisiejszej formy. Na podstawie badań Johna DeFrancisa przedstawię również pogląd, według którego teza o całkowicie ideograficznym charakterze znaków sinojapońskich to jedynie mit, który jest stale powielany w kulturze zachodniej. Pomimo wielu zmian, jakie zaszły w ideogramach, nadal można odnaleźć zależność pomiędzy ich znaczeniem i formą. Co więcej, także późniejsze ideogramy były czasem tworzone w taki sposób, aby swoją formą sugerować znaczenie. Jednakże, badacze etymologii znaków często bazują jedynie na domysłach, ich opinie nie zawsze są zgodne, co sprawia, że nie można bezkrytycznie przyjmować wszystkich ich interpretacji.

The purpose of this thesis is to show the relation between the meaning o chosen Sino-Japanese characters and the meaning of their semantic components, bushu, which are also called radicals. The thesis focuses on three radicals that have undergone relatively small changes since their emergence as simple pictograms, and which carry a strong relation to the current meaning of the characters they are part of. The thesis begins with a short summary of the most important stages of Sino-Japanese characters’ development to lay the background for describing their contemporary form. It also presents a view, based on the researches by John DeFrancis, that the idea of entirely ideographic nature of Sino-Japanese characters is nothing more but a myth, constantly repeated in the culture of the West. Despite many changes in the structure of the ideograms, the relation between their meaning and their form can still be found. What is more, even the later characters were sometimes constructed in a manner, that their form would imply their meaning. Yet, Sino-Japanese characters’ etymology researchers often rely on guess, their opinions are not always unanimous, so their interpretations should not be accepted unconditionally.
