The work presented centers around the question of freedom and authenticity of existence in the aspects of the meaning given by the French contemporary philosopher, J.P. Sartre. They are treated as prime values in Sartre’s philosophy. However, they cannot be accurately understood without prior analysis of the theory of existence. Following the studies of the key definitions in Sartre’s ontology, such as thing-in-itself, reflective consciousness and pre- reflective consciousness, as well as existence for oneself, and after analyzing the dynamics between the I and the Other, the author of the work devotes its main part to the idea of freedom, of which a starting point is the definition of an act. The author presents an ontological disparity between consciousness and existence, as well as the actual and previous state of consciousness, all corresponding with the structural freedom of a human being. Freedom is introduced here in its most abstract and pejorative sense because it exemplifies the notion of being independent from determinism of existence.In subsequent chapters of the first part of the thesis, a matter of human existence, in relation to the outward reality, arises with an ongoing and reciprocal influence of the world on the individual consciousness. Surrounding environment exerts pressure on one’s consciousness imposing on them assumptions and implications already formed. These assumptions and implications constitute an element which is an imperative component of self-knowledge. Namely, the individual defines himself whether he makes his choice because he accepts and follows suggested ideas or he defies them. Ontological freedom manifests only in overcoming concrete forms of existence, in other case it would not apply as freedom of a man in the physical world. Therefore Sartre’s ontology aims at explaining the heart of structural freedom of a human and his ultimate responsibility for himself and the world.The second part of the thesis is devoted to the question of authenticity of existence. The author elaborates on the matters of “ill faith” and Sartre’s atheism, respectively. He also presents numerous complications arising due to the lack of super individual values and shows their relativistic and nihilistic consequences. He points out that it is extremely difficult to relate to any practical ethic norms in Sartre’s philosophy. The term of authenticity of existence proves to be ambiguous and has different interpretations. According to the author, authenticity of existence equals keeping constant distance to the choices that are made and actions that are undertaken. It consists in a permanent memory of an absolute freedom of oneself.

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest zagadnieniu wolności oraz egzystencji autentycznej w znaczeniu, jakie nadaje im współczesny filozof francuski J. P. Sartre. Powyższe zagadnienia są w filozofii Sartre'a traktowane jako wartości naczelne, jednak nie mogą być właściwie zrozumiane bez uprzedniej analizy teorii bytu. Po przeanalizowaniu zatem podstawowych pojęć sartre'owskiej ontologii, takich jak: byt w sobie, świadomość przedrefleksyjna, świadomość refleksyjna, byt dla siebie oraz po omówieniu relacji: ja - inny, autor pierwszą, główną część pracy poświęca koncepcji wolności, której zasadniczym punktem wyjściowym jest pojęcie czynu. Autor przedstawia ontologiczny dystans między świadomością i bytem oraz między aktualnym i poprzednim stanem świadomości, co utożsamione zostaje ze strukturalną wolnością ludzkiego istnienia. Wolność występuje tutaj w jej najbardziej abstrakcyjnej i negatywnej postaci, ponieważ jest wolnością od zdeterminowania przez byt. W kolejnych rozdziałach pierwszej części pracy podjęta zostaje kwestia istnienia człowieka w świecie, które jest nieustannym, wzajemnym oddziaływaniem świata na świadomość i znaczeniotwórczej aktywności podmiotu na świat zewnętrzny. Otoczenie wywiera presję na świadomość jednostki, narzucając oceny i znaczenia już ukonstytuowane. One to stanowią element sytuacji, który jest koniecznym składnikiem samowiedzy. Przez niego właśnie człowiek określa się niezależnie od tego, czy swoim wyborem akceptuje i odtwarza sugerowane sobie znaczenia, czy też je odrzuca. Wolność ontologiczna może się manifestować tylko w przezwyciężaniu uprzedmiotowionych form egzystencji, w przeciwnym wypadku nie byłaby wolnością człowieka jako istoty cielesnej, znajdującej się w świecie. Cała zatem ontologia Sartre'a ma na celu uzasadnienie strukturalnej wolności człowieka oraz jego totalnej odpowiedzialności za siebie i cały świat. Druga część pracy poświęcona jest zagadnieniu egzystencji autentycznej. Autor dochodzi do znaczenia tego pojęcia analizując kolejno kwestie nieautentyczności - "złej wiary" i sartreowskiego ateizmu. Przedstawia liczne komplikacje wynikające z braku ponadindywidualnych wartości oraz pokazuje ich relatywistyczne i nihilistyczne konsekwencje. Pokazuje, iż z filozofii Sartre'a trudno jest wysnuć praktyczne normy etyczne. Pojęcie egzystencji autentycznej okazuje się niejasne i posiada wiele różnych interpretacji. Zdaniem autora egzystencja autentyczna polega na ciągłym zachowaniu dystansu do własnych wyborów i działań. Polega na ciągłej pamięci o własnej, absolutnej wolności.
