The motiif of journey in ancient literature - selected examples

The aim of my work is to present journey motif in ancient literature and the general characteristics of selected personages from antiquity whose lives were associated with travelling. The preface of my work contains a short introduction to the ancient literature and reference to wander and wanderers which will be the leitmotiv of my work. First chapter contains an introduction to the myth as the part of ancient genre, a description of the transmission of the myths over the centuries, the detailed classification of the species and links to literature and art.In order to make a better description of the myth, its characteristics is based on the specific characters and works with sample citations. The second chapter describes the journey motif in literature, its general characteristics and genesis. There is also a description of the journey of two characters: Claudius Rutylius Namatianus in the poem De Reditu Suo describing the coastal voyage from Rome to Gaul. The second is Aeneas the hero of the Aeneid of Virgil. In conjunction with the description of Odysseus' journey, it is possible to see three different descriptions of the journeys and the portraiture of three different characters. The third chapter is a description of the causes of the Trojan War because of which Odysseus have been returning to his homeland for ten years. This chapter also describes the cunning of Ulisses, both during the war and before it begun. The fourth chapter illustrates the detailed description of Odysseus' journey to his homeland on the basis of Homer's epic poem Odyssey. This chapter shows how the main character undergoes several transformations, what emotions tore him and how he behaved in particular situations. It is also crucial to make a description of each stop on the road and how newly encountered characters interacted with Odysseus and his companions. The fifth chapter concerns the life and the surroundings of the main character of my work- Odysseus. The chapter also contains Ulisses’s short biography outline, pedigree and description of the youth. What is more the closest family and ancestors (mother, father and grandfather) are also described. The last, sixth chapter describes the structure of the Odyssey, and description of an important aspect which was the wisdom acquired through experience. In summary are included conclusions on the basis of all the work, a brief description of the discussed issues, and my opinion on the issue.

Celem mojej pracy jest przedstawienie motywu wędrówki w literaturze oraz ogólnej charakterystyki wybranych postaci literackich, których życie było związane z podróżą. We wstępie mojej pracy znajduje się krótkie wprowadzenie do literatury starożytnej oraz nawiązanie do wędrówki oraz postaci wędrujących, które będą motywem przewodnim mojej pracy. Rozdział pierwszy zawiera charakterystykę gatunku literackiego jakim jest mit, opis formy przekazywania mitów na przestrzeni wieków, szczegółowej klasyfikacji tego gatunku oraz powiązania z literaturą i sztuką. W celu lepszego ukazania mitu, charakterystyka gatunku oparta jest na konkretnych postaciach i utworach z przykładowymi cytatami. Rozdział drugi opisuje motyw wędrówki w literaturze, jego ogólną charakterystykę oraz genezę. Zawarty jest tutaj także opis podróży dwóch postaci: Rutyliusa Claudiusa Namatianusa w poemacie O powrocie z Rzymu do Galii oraz Eneasza, bohatera Eneidy Wergiliusza. W połączeniu z opisem podróży Odyseusza można ujrzeć trzy różne opisy wędrówki oraz charakterystykę trzech różnych bohaterów. W rozdziale trzecim znajduje się opis przyczyn wojny trojańskiej w wyniku której Odyseusz przez dziesięć lat powracał do swej ojczyzny. Rozdział ten opisuje także spryt Odyseusza zarówno w trakcie wojny jak i przed jej rozpoczęciem. Rozdział czwarty obrazuje szczegółowy opis wędrówki Odyseusza do ojczyzny na podstawie eposu Homera pt. Odyseja. Rozdział ten ukazuje jakie transformacje przechodził główny bohater, jakie emocje nim targały oraz jak zachowywał się w poszczególnych sytuacjach. Istotny jest opis każdego przystanku w podróży oraz przedstawienie jak nowo spotkane postaci oddziaływały na Odyseusza i jego towarzyszy. Rozdział piąty dotyczy życia oraz otoczenia postaci przewodniej mojej pracy – Odyseusza. Zawarty jest tutaj rys biograficzny postaci, rodowód oraz opis młodości. Co więcej opisana jest także najbliższa rodzina oraz przodkowie (matka, ojciec oraz dziadek). Ostatni, szósty rozdział opisuje konstrukcję, problematykę Odysei oraz opis ważnego aspektu utworu jakim była mądrość nabyta poprzez doświadczenie. W podsumowaniu zawarte są natomiast wnioski na podstawie całej pracy, krótki opis poruszanej problematyki oraz moja opinia na temat poruszanego przeze mnie zagadnienia.
