Because of parental care, the offspring gets only the profits on the contrary to their parents, who must also contend with the cost of energy, time and resources.

Opieka rodzicielska jest zjawiskiem dość powszechnym w świecie zwierząt. Jednak u każdego gatunku może ona wyglądać inaczej, mimo że cel jest ten sam dla wszystkich: wzrost własnego sukcesu reprodukcyjnego poprzez zwiększenie dostosowania swojego potomstwa.Na wygląd opieki mają wpływ takie elementy jak: cechy fizjologiczne i behawioralne rodziców, stopień samodzielności dzieci w momencie przyjścia na świat oraz czynniki środowiskowe. Dymorfizm płciowy i wynikający z tego nierównomierny rozkład wysiłków rodziców podczas opieki nad potomstwem, powoduje pojawienie się konfliktu płciowego.
