The Cult of the Holy Death - the Religious Syncretism in Contemporary Mexico

The master's thesis presents the issue of the Saint Death in Mexico. The first chapter introduces the definitions of new religious movements and the attitude of the catholic church towards them. The second part discusses the belief of the people living in Mesoamerica before the conquest, the perception of the death in their everyday life, the influence of the conquest for their later fate and the religious syncretism as a result of it. The third chapter describes the symbolism and the ceremonial of the cult. Furthermore, it gives information about the present situation of its believers and mentions the other, similar cults in Latin America. The last part of the thesis concentrates on the conflicts with the catholic church, the connections with the criminal world and the presence of this cult in movies and music.

Praca ma na celu prezentację tematyki związanej z kultem Świętej Śmierci w Meksyku. Pierwszy rozdział przedstawia problematykę zdefiniowania ruchów religijnych oraz stosunku do nich kościoła katolickiego. Druga część pracy omawia wierzenia ludności zamieszkującej Mezoamerykę przed konkwistą, wizerunek śmierci w ich codziennym życiu oraz wpływ podboju hiszpańskiego na ich dalsze losy i powstały w ten sposób synkretyzm religijny. W trzecim rozdziale opisana zostaje symbolika oraz rytuały stosowane przez wyznawców kultu, czytelnik zapoznany zostaje także z teraźniejszą sytuacją jego zwolenników oraz z innymi, podobnymi kultami na terenie Ameryki Łacińskiej. Ostatnia część poświęcona jest konfliktom z kościołem katolickim oraz powiązaniom ze światem przestępczym. Wspomniana jest także obecność kultu w filmach oraz w muzyce.
