Czwartego dnia wojny sześciodniowej, tj. 08 czerwca 1967 roku w pobliżu wód terytorialnych zwaśnionych państw doszło do niespodziewanego zdarzenia. Znajdujący się tam amerykański okręt wywiadowczy USS Liberty został zaatakowany i prawie zatopiony przez nieznane wówczas siły. Dość szybko do ataku przyznał się Izrael twierdząc, że był on efektem nieszczęśliwej pomyłki. Mimo wszystko utworzono amerykańską komisję śledczą w celu wyjaśnienia co właściwie stało sie tamtego dnia. Śledztwo zakończono zaledwie po tygodniu ogłaszając, że rzeczywiście do ataku doszło w rezultacjie pomyłki, jednocześnie dawano Izraelczykom do zrozumienia, że Waszyngton oczekuje ukarania winnych zaniedbań. Tel-Awiw. który przeprawadzał swoje własne dochodzenia nie zamierzał nikogo karać utrzymując, że ustalono, iż nie doszło do żadnych zaniedbań ze strony izraelskiego personelu wojskowego. Rząd amerykański choć niechetnie to jednak szybko pogodził się z tą sytuacją i po dziś dzień broni stanowiska izraelskiego. Cała sprawa jednak nie ucichła, wielu Amerykanów, w tym szczególnie członków byłych załogi głośnio wyraża swoje przekonanie że Izrael zaatakował USS Liberty celowo, bądź dopuścił sie bardzo poważnych zaniedbań, zaś incydent został zatuszowany przez Waszyngton i Tel-Awiw. Celem tej pracy jest usunięcie białej plamy, jaką w polskiej historiografii jest atak na Liberty. W tym celu przedstawiono przebieg ataku wraz z wydarzeniami doń prowadzącymi, opisano wszystkie śledztwa mające na celu wyjaśnienie okoliczności tego zdarzenia jak i przedstawiono alternatywny punk widzenia wyrażany przez zwolenników powtórnego zbadania tego incydentu. Praca opiera się przede wszystkim na wszelkiego rodzaju dokumentach zarówno amerykańskich jak i izraelskich. Opracowania tematu ze względu na swoją wyraźnie widoczne podejście emocjonalne ich autorów pełniły tu rolę drugorzędną.

On the forth day of the Six-Day War, i.e. 08 June 1967, nearby teritorial waters of the belligernet countries an unexpected occurrance took place. An American Navy ship USS Liberty that was operating in that area, was attacked and nearly sunk by unknown, at that time, forces. Quite quickly Israel took responsibility for the assault, claiming that it was an accident. Despite this, an American court of inquiry was established to find out what exactly happened on that day. The inquarly lasted only a week and found that indeed the attak was accidental, however it was made clear for the Israeli Government that Washington was expecting the persons guilty of negligence to be punished. Tel-Aviv which was running its own investigations wasn't intending to punish anyone. Justifying its decision with the results of its investigations which didn't find any of Israeli military guilty of any neglect. American governmnt accepted this situation though not with ease. Since that time, it consequently backs Israeli decision. However the interest in the Liberty incident didn't dimminish. Many Americans, especially Liberty's former crew members make loud accusations that the attack was intentional or at least Israel was guilty of gross neglegences, while Washington and Tel-Aviv whitewashed everything. This thesis aims at presenting the story of USS Liberty which still is a blank spot in Polish historiography. I began with the description of the attack and the circumstances leading to it, then I presented the findings of both American and Israeli investigations. I finished with the views exspressed by the people supporting the idea of a new inquiry into the case of the Liberty incident. My thesis was based mainly on the American and Israeli documents concerning the assault on the Liberty and its aftemath. Other author's studies were of lesser importance for me because of their strong subjectivity.
