Guilty or innocent? Christians and the Great Fire of Rome in the year 64 C.E.

The main objective of this research is an attempt to explain the circumstances, which assisted the Great Fire of Rome in the year 64 C.E. I try to consider in it a few hypotheses on possible causes and a course of the disaster. I pay special attention to the Christians as the theoretical preparators of the conflagration, in order to clarify, whether the punishments which fell upon them for its causing, were even slightly justified.The first chapter, preparing the ground for further research, is about the development of the Church in the Roman Empire to the year 64 C.E. in the context of its interaction with the pagan society and imperial authorities. The second chapter shows evrything that we konw for sure about the fire of Rome, with attention paid to the Christian community of Rome, and the persecutoin which it sufferd as a consequence of the event. The third chapter is an attempt to explain how it might have come to the mentioned disaster in the context of following three hypotheses: Nero as the preparator of the fire; Christians as the preparators; and the conflagration as the act of an accident.

Głównym celem niniejszej pracy jest próba wyjaśnienia okoliczności towarzyszących wielkiemu pożarowi Rzymu z 64 roku. Staram się rozważyć w niej kilka hipotez na temat ewentualnych przyczyn i przebiegu katastrofy. Szczególnie dużo uwagi poświęcam chrześcijanom jako teoretycznym sprawcom pożogi, chcąc wyjaśnić, czy kary jakie spadły na nich za jej wzniecenie były choć w niewielkim stopniu uzasadnione. Rozdział pierwszy, przygotowując grunt do dalszych badań, mówi o rozwoju Kościoła w cesarstwie rzymskim do 64 roku w kontekście jego interakcji ze społeczeństwem pogańskim i władzami imperialnymi. Rozdział drugi przedstawia to wszystko co o pożarze Rzymu wiemy na pewno, ze zwróceniem uwagi na chrześcijańską gminę rzymską oraz prześladowania jakich doświadczyła ona w konsekwencji zdarzenia. Rozdział trzeci zaś jest próbą wyjaśnienia w jaki sposób mogło dojść do rzeczonej katastrofy w kontekście trzech następujących hipotez: Neron jako sprawca pożaru; chrześcijanie jako jego sprawcy; oraz pożar jako dzieło przypadku.
