Praca bada mechanizm tworzenia społeczno-krytycznego wymiaru powieści szwedzkiego pisarza Pera Christiana Jersilda „Babels hus”. W analizie zastosowano narzędzia wypracowane na gruncie współczesnej narratologii, przede wszystkim strukturalistyczny model Gérarda Genetta. Praca zachowuje w swym układzie formalnym wyróżnione przez badacza podstawowe kategorie narratologicznego opisu: historię, opowiadanie i narrację. Drugi i trzeci rozdział teoretyczny pracy, odpowiadający drugiej i trzeciej kategorii, w pełni korzysta z repertuaru analitycznego francuskiego badacza. Pierwszy rozdział pracy, poświęcony marginalizowanej w systemie Genette’a historii, cechuje teoretyczny eklektyzm. Rozdział sięga do bogatego dorobku rozmaitych szkół narratologicznych, reprezentowanych m.in przez Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan, Seymoura Chatmana, Vladimira Proppa, Algirdasa Juliena Greimasa, Clauda Bremonda. Omówiono tu takie aspekty historii, jak: intryga, bohaterowie, czas i przestrzeń. Analiza poziomu opowiadania obejmuje kategorię czasu (wraz z subkategoriami: porządek, częstotliwość, i prędkość) i trybu (uwzględniającą dystans i perspektywę). Poziom narracji zbadano, uwzględniając jej poziomy, czas, osobę narratora i jego funkcje. Analizie poddano przede wszystkim gatunkowe narzędzia społeczno-krytycznego projektu Jersilda: strategie publicystyczne i poetykę exemplum.

My thesis investigates narrative strategies used by the Swedish writer Per Christian Jersild in his 1978 novel ‘Babels hus’ (‘House of Babel’). The study focuses primarily on how narratological tools are employed to depict the Swedish healthcare system in the late 1970s. Jersild sees it from a socially-critical perspective and chooses journalistic strategies and exemplum as vehicles for his literary project. My analysis is based on the structuralist model of Gérard Genette. In the outline of my thesis I follow his distinction between three major narrative categories: story, discourse and narration. The first chapter offers an methodologically eclectic approach to the novel’s story dimension. As Genette gives priority to the second and the third of the major narrative categories mentioned above and marginalises the first, I refer in the first chapter to other theoreticians including Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan, Seymour Chatman, Vladimir Propp, Algirdas Julien Greimas, Claude Bremond. I examine following aspects of the story-level: plot, time, characters and setting. The second chapter deals with the discourse-level and examines its time (including subcategories order, duration and frequency) and mood (including distance and perspective). The final chapter investigates the narrative voice and its categories: narrator, narrative levels, time of narration and functions.
