Imaginary geographies of independence : language in Croatian science fiction of the new regionalism

In this paper science fiction is considered as a primarily spatial genre, establishing in that regard the category of speculative fiction of the new regionalism. This category includes the most recent Croatian speculative fiction in which region and regional identity become the main topic. The examples provided include works which discuss the topic of Istrian independence, with special attention being paid to Marina Jadrejčić's cycle of stories: S druge strane struje, Smrt vrba and Ja imam jedan san. The texts are analyzed via the categories of space and memory, but the paper also focuses on the language of stories, which allows us to investigate whether the author manages to exploit the subversive potential of science fiction, understood in terms of Darko Suvin's theory as a genre of cognitive estrangement

U radu se znanstvena fantastika promatra kao prije svega spacijalni žanr, pa se u vezi s timeizdvaja kategorija fantastike novog regionalizma koja obuhvaća najnoviju hrvatsku fantastičnu književnost u kojoj prostor regije i regijski identitet postaju ključna tema. Prikazani su primjer djela koja tematiziraju neovisnost Istre, a posebna se pažnja posvećuje ciklusu Marine Jadrejčić koji čine priče S druge strane struje, Smrt vrba i Ja imam jedan san. Analiza kategorija prostora i pamćenja te jezika priča omogućuje odgovor na pitanje u kojoj mjeri autorica uspijeva iskoristiti mogući subverzivan potencijal znanstvene fantastike promatrane kao žanr spoznajne začudnosti uskladu s razmišljanjima Darka Suvina.
