The relationship between the Hutsuls and Poles as seen in Stanisław Vincenz's tetralogy "Na wysokiej połoninie"

W swoim dziele "Na wysokiej połoninie" Stanisław Vincenz przedstawia kulturową mozaikę ludów, zamieszkujących Huculszczyznę, prezentując relacje między nimi. Szczególny akcent kładzie na pokojowe relacje między autochtonicznymi Hucułami i Polakami, których mieszkało tu stosunkowo wielu. Autor podkreśla różnice między nimi, jednak rzadko są one przyczyną konfliktu, częściej prowadzą do wzajemnego poznania i wymiany poglądów. Przedstawiciele obu narodów wspólnie świętowali, mieli wspólne cele, związane z pracą, zawierali przyjaźnie. In his work "Na wysokiej połoninie" Stanisław Vincenz presents cultural mosaic of groups that inhabited Hutsulshchyna and describes relationships between them. Vincenz puts special emphasis on the peaceful relations between the indigenous Hutsuls and Poles who constituted a relatively high proportion of the settler population. The author highlights differences between these two groups stressing that the differences are seldom the cause of conflict, but rather a possibility of understanding each other's cultures and exchanging views. Representatives of both nations set common work-related goals, made new friendships and celebrated holidays together. An interesting example of fruitful cooperation between those two nations was cutting down trees - the activity that kept the Hutsuls and Poles mutually engaged. The most notable example of the harmonious relationship that those two nations enjoyed was friendship between the Hutsul Foka and Piotr Sawicki, the blacksmith's son. It needs to be stressed that different religious rituals and frequent exposure to them did not pose a problem for the protagonists in Vincenz's tetralogy, but rather were an opportunity for friendly and cultural information exchange. It can be noticed that the abovementioned examples create a picture of positive, harmonious relationships between the Hutsuls and Poles.
