The text of translation and the structure of its audience

Artykuł zawiera analizę fragmentów tłumaczeń literatury rosyjskiej na język polski, która dokonana była pod wpływem rozważań zawartych przez J. Łotmana w jego publikacji "The Text and the Structure of Its Audience" (1922). Zanalizowano polskie przekłady fragmentów z literatury rosyjskiej, zawierające dawne nazwy liter rosyjskiego alfabetu, które wyszły z użycia pod koniec XIX wieku ale zachowały się do dnia dzisiejszego nie tylko jako nazwy liter, lecz także jako elementy składowe trwałych połączeń wyrazowych, frazeologizmów czy powiedzeń. Analiza ta dowodzi, że brak analogicznego zjawiska kulturowego w polskiej rzeczywistości językowej uniemożliwia dokonanie pełnowartościowego i ekwiwalentnego przekładu.

The paper offers the analysis of the translation of the excerpts from Russian literature into the Polish language performed under the influence of "The Text and the Structure of Its Audience" (1922) by Yuri Lotman. The excerpts under discussion contain the former names of the letters in the Russian alphabet which went out of use at the end of the 19th century, although they are preserved to this day not only as names of letters, but also the components of collocations, idioms or sayings. The paper concludes that due to the absence of an analogous cultural phenomenon in the Polish linguistic reality it is impossible to generate truthful and equivalent translation of these components.
