Abstract in English
This paper is devoted to the ritual of szczodrowanie (wish-giving) on Epiphany Eve in Lemkivshchyna and the accompanying songs. The author describes extensively the ethnographic background, the structure of the ritual and its functions stemming both from verbal and non-verbal activities. The Lemko szczodrówkas, coming from manuscripts, publications and the author’s own field research have been classified and analyzed text-wise against a wider Slavic and Ukrainian background. The controversial matter of the differences between szczodrówka and a wishing carol has been discussed, which in folk awareness seem to be different than in academic publications; also the mechanics of the Christianization of texts has been examined.
