Euthanasia : historical aspects of the concept

Przedmiotem artykułu są historyczne aspekty i różne konotacje pojęcia eutanazji. Wyjaśniam w nim różnicę pomiędzy etymologicznym („dobra śmierć”) a współczesnym („zabójstwo z litości”) sensem tego pojęcia. Poprzez omówienie odpowiednich fragmentów klasycznych dzieł filozoficznych, m.in The Advancement of Learning Francisa Bacona, a zwłaszcza Państwa Platona i Utopii Thomasa More’a, wskazuję i objaśniam pewne często spotykane nieporozumienia spowodowane mylną interpretacją różnych znaczeń pojęcia eutanazji.

The article is devoted to historical aspects of the concept of euthanasia, as well as its various connotations. It clarifies the difference between its etymological sense (“good death”) and its contemporary sense (“mercy killing”). By discussing relevant passages from classical philosophical works, e.g. Francis Bacon’s The Advancement of Learning, and especially Plato’s Republic and Thomas More’s Utopia, it identifies and explains common confusions resulting from misinterpretations of the concept of euthanasia.
