The aim of the article is to outline a personal as well as professional portrait of an eminent Polish scholar, professor Helena Willman-Grabowska (1870-1957), one of the protoplasts of Polish Oriental studies, an expert in Indian and Iranian philology, professor at the Sorbonne in Paris and the first woman professor in the history of the Jagiellonian University. In the first half of the 20th century she carried out modern interdisciplinary research, combining tirelessly the passion of a researcher with activity that popularised her domain of study among non-specialists. Heavily experienced by the times in which she lived, she never waived her humanity and dignity, remaining a role model for the generations of scholars to come.
