"Liber memorialis" by Lucius Ampelius - a schoolbook from the 2nd century

The article attempts to examine whether the 2nd century Latin text attributed to a man named Lucius Ampelius can be treated as an example of an ancient Roman schoolbook. The function and nature of Liber memorialis can be defined by its title, which refers to the rote method of teaching and learning, a dedication to a young man named Macrinus, who could have been Ampelius’ pupil, an organization of the text, where numerous bullets points are used, and a number of simplifications, catalogues and mnemonic techniques. Additionally, Liber memorialis is divided into thematic units devoted to natural science, mythology, culture, politics and history. The analysis of the text written by Ampelius seems to indicate that it can be considered as a teaching aid written with the aim of organizing and consolidating pupil’s knowledge.
