Reconstruction of the historical landscape of Zabrze Biskupice, Mikulczyce and Rokitnica in the Middle Ages. Archaeological, historical and geographical study.

Praca jest próbą pełnego, interdyscyplinarnego spojrzenia na zagadnienia osadnictwa w Biskupicach, Mikulczycach i Rokitnicy, dzielnicach miasta Zabrze w województwie Śląskim. Obejmuje ona okres od 2. połowy XII do 2. połowy XVI wieku. Studium oparto na źródłach archeologicznych, historycznych, topograficznych, legendach i podaniach, reliktach językowych oraz obserwacjach terenowych. Jej celem jest odtworzenie wszystkich aspektów osadnictwa tego okresu: warunków geograficznych i hydrologicznych, sposobu kształtowania się wsi i jej granic, założeń obronnych i sieci parafialnej, kultury materialnej, a także informacji o mieszkańcach tych osad. Podjęto w niej próbę uchwycenia ewolucji tych miejscowości oraz wyjaśnienia przyczyn tych zmian. Zagadnienia te zostały zaprezentowane na tle sytuacji politycznej regionu. Porównanie wybranych aspektów analizowanych osad uwidoczniło ich podobieństwa i różnice. Autor podjął próbę wyjaśnienia tych różnic. Podsumowanie zawiera rekonstrukcje omawianego obszaru, ukazanie części jego zmian na przestrzeni wieków oraz konkluzje badawcze. W końcowym etapie rozważań wysunięto postulaty dotyczące konieczności przeprowadzenia dalszych badań tego zagadnienia oraz nowych obszarów, jakie powinny one objąć. W pracy zaproponowano także uniwersalną metodę analiz mikroregionalnych i przedstawiono jej założenia.

This dissertation is an attempt to complete an interdisciplinary scrutiny on all the issue of settlements in Biskupice, Mikulczyce and Rokitnica, districts in the city of Zabrze, Silesia Province. It covers the period from the second half of the twelfth to the second half of the sixteenth century. The study was based on archaeological, historical and geographical sources, legends and tales, linguistic relics and field observations. The aim of this study is to recreate all aspects of the settlement of this period: geographical and hydrological conditions, formation methods of the villages and its boundaries, defensive constructions and parish network, material culture and information about the inhabitants of these settlements. This study will attempt to capture the evolution of these villages and explain the reasons they changed. These topics have been set against the background of the political situation in the region. By comparing select aspects of the analyzed settlements and revealed their similarities and differences, the author has made an attempt to explain these differences. Summary includes reconstruction of the area illustrating changes over the centuries and the conclusions of the research. The final stage of consideration is to put forwards a proposals regarding the need for further investigation on the issues and new areas that should be covered. The study also proposes a universal analysis method of micro-regional studies and presents its assumptions.
