Everything comes from the Great Book of Nature - nature in the architecture of Antoni Gaudi, the main representative of Modernisme

Tematem przedłożonej pracy jest stanowisko głównego przedstawiciela modernistów katalońskich, Antonia Gaudiego, wobec roli przyrody w procesie projektowania. „Wszystko pochodzi z wielkiej księgi Natury”- mawiał architekt; główny cel polega zatem na wykazaniu w jego dziełach rozwiązań zaczerpniętych rodem ze świata ożywionego. Praca zbudowana została z czterech rozdziałów. Pierwszy przedstawia kontekst społeczno-historyczny oraz główne idee sztuki przełomu wieków XIX i XX. Kolejne trzy części wykazują zależności między światem architektury Katalończyka, a naturą oraz prezentują motywy przyrodnicze występujące w wybranych obiektach wzniesionych w Barcelonie i jej najbliższej okolicy.

The subject of this thesis is to present the standpoint of Antoni Gaudi, the main representative of Modernisme, on the matter of importance of nature in the process of architectural design. ‘Everything comes from the Great Book of Nature’- such was claimed by the architect; the main aim is to demonstrate the nature-based solutions which he used in his works. This dissertation consists of four chapters. In the first one there is shown the socio-historical context and the main principals of art of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. In the next three parts there are presented the relationships between the nature and the world of Gaudi’s architecture, and the natural motifs which appeared in the selected buildings from Barcelona and its vicinity.
