True or false? Verification of politicians’ statements on the COVID-19 pandemic on the fact-checking portal Demagog.org.pl

Fact-checking to względnie nowe zjawisko medialne, które jest jeszcze stosunkowo słabo opisane w literaturze medioznawczej. Stale rośnie znaczenie organizacji factcheckingowych z uwagi na m.in instrumentalne lub nieumiejętne podejście do faktów przez niektórych aktorów życia społecznego, w tym polityków. Celem artykułu jest prezentacja wyników analizy dotyczącej sposobu, w jaki portal factcheckingowy Demagog.org.pl weryfikował wypowiedzi najważniejszych osób w państwie na temat pandemii COVID-19. Badania służą próbie opisu wybranych cech praktyki medialnej, jaką jest fact-checking polityczny.

Fact-checking is a relatively new media phenomenon, which is still poorly descri bed in the media studies literature. The importance of fact-checking organizations is constantly growing due to e.g. instrumental or incompetent approach to facts by some actors of social life, including politicians. The aim of the article is to present the results of the analysis on how the fact-checking portal Demagog.org.pl verified the statements of the most important people in the country on the COVID-19 pandemic. The research is an attempt to describe selected features of media practice, which is political fact-checking.
