The Course of Events and Consequences of the 1980 Kwangju Uprising

Tytułem niniejszej pracy jest „Powstanie w Kwangju w 1980 r. – przebieg i konsekwencje”. Na określenie opisywanych wydarzeń funkcjonuje również nazwa „Masakra w Kwangju” oraz „Prodemokratyczny Ruch w Kwangju”. Celem pracy jest przybliżenie wielowymiarowego kontekstu Powstania oraz wskazanie szeregu procesów spowodowanych reakcją władz Korei Południowej oraz Stanów Zjednoczonych odnośnie protestów w Kwangju. Mimo upływu 40 lat Powstanie w Kwangju to wciąż jedno z najbardziej kontrowersyjnych wydarzeń w historii Korei Południowej. Co więcej, jest to także tragedia, która odmieniła losy kraju.

The present thesis is titled “The Course of Events and Consequences of the 1980 Kwangju Uprising”. “Kwangju Massacre” and “Kwangju Democratization Movement” are also frequently used to describe the following events. The aim of this thesis is to introduce the multidimensional context of the Uprising and to indicate the series of processes triggered by the reaction of the South Korean and US authorities regarding the protests in Kwangju. Even though 40 years have passed, The Kwangju Uprising is still one of the most controversial events of the modern Korean history. Furthermore, it is a tragedy that changed the fate of this country.
