Tłumacząc amerykański fenomen kulturowy: wybrane aspekty komiksu Dilbert w przekładzie na język polski

Niniejsza praca jest poświęcona analizie tłumaczenia wybranych komiksów o Dilbercie, autorstwa Scotta Adamsa, wydanych w latach 1995-2003 w Stanach Zjednoczonych oraz w latach 2007-2009 w Polsce. Omawiany materiał zajmuje ważną pozycję w kulturze źródłowej oraz pełni szereg funkcji tekstowych, takich jak informatywna, ekspresywna, impresywna oraz humorystyczna. Głównym celem pracy jest zbadanie, jaki wpływ miało tłumaczenie na rzeczone funkcje. W pracy omówiono wybrane aspekty komiksu w kontekście przekładoznawczym oraz wyjaśniono różnice w popularności i statusie tego medium w obu kulturach, które wpływają na przekład, a w konsekwencji na funkcje, jakie omawiany materiał mógł pełnić w kulturze docelowej. Do analizy wybrano przykłady związane z trzema problematycznymi z punktu widzenia przekładu kategoriami, tj. z grą słów, elementami kulturowymi oraz żargonem korporacyjnym i słownictwem specjalistycznym. Analiza tłumaczenia wykazała znaczne osłabienie funkcji informatywnej, ekspresywnej oraz impresywnej, spowodowane eliminacją części elementów kulturowych oraz zjawisk charakterystycznych dla systemu korporacyjnego, w tym słownictwa korporacyjnego i specjalistycznego. W rezultacie funkcja humorystyczna również straciła na znaczeniu, a przekład przekład gier słownych okazał się poważnym wyzwaniem dla tłumaczki, w wyniku czego część komiksów utraciła swój komiczny charakter.

This dissertation is devoted to the analysis of selected Dilbert comics authored by Scott Adams, which were published in the years 1995-2003 in the United States and in the years 2007-2009 in Poland. Dilbert comics own a special place in the American culture and perform several textual functions such as the expressive, vocative, informative and aesthetic function. The main aim of the thesis is to analyse whether they have undergone any changes in the process of translation. In this paper I discuss selected aspects of comics from the perspective of translation and differences in popularity and status of this medium in both cultures as important factors influencing the translator's choices and text functions the comics perform in the target culture. The analysis is divided into three sections, each devoted to a category problematic from translational perspective, namely wordplay, culture-specific items and corporate jargon/technical vocabulary. The textual functions Dilbert performed in the source culture have become subdued to a great degree. The informative, expressive and vocative functions have become much less relevant owing to the partial loss of cultural elements and corporate/technical vocabulary. The humouristic function also lost in significance in examples where those elements formed the basis of the jokes as well as in several instances of wordplay, where puns proved to be a serious obstacle to the translator.
