Between the autobiography and the novel – analysis of the shishōsetsu form based on Dazai Osamu’s works

Przedmiotem badań niniejszej pracy jest prozatorska forma shishōsetsu, która łączy w sobie zarówno elementy fikcji, jak i fakty z życiorysu twórcy. Autorka zastanowi się nad specyfiką formy oraz spróbuje nakreślić jej charakterystyczne cechy na przykładzie dzieł Dazaia Osamu. W rozdziale pierwszym zarysowane zostały ramy czasowe powstawania shishōsetsu ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wpływów naturalizmu. Drugi rozdział koncentruje się na stylu pisarskim Dazaia, a także na analizie wybranych jego utworów. Najważniejsze z nich to "Zmierzch" i "Zatracenie". Rozdział trzeci jest analizą porównawczą shishōsetsu, autobiografii i powieści autobiograficznej. Autorka odwołuje się do koncepcji tzw. „paktu autobiograficznego” i rozpatruje shishōsetsu jako zjawisko specyficzne dla literatury japońskiej, pomimo wyraźnych inspiracji zachodnią prozą.

The subject of the paper is the literary form shishōsetsu, which combines elements of fiction as well as biographical facts from the author's life. The outline of its characteristic features will based on Dazai Osamu's works. The first chapter introduces the timeframe in which shishōsetsu originated with particular emphasis on the influence of naturalism. The second chapter focuses on the writing style of Dazai Osamu. It also includes the analysis of his selected works, the most important ones being - "The Setting Sun" and "No Longer Human". The third chapter is a comparative analysis of shishōsetsu, autobiography and autobiographical novel. The concept of the "autobiographical pact" will be brought up. Finally, an attemp will be made to answer the question, whether shishōsetsu is a phenomenon specific to Japanese literature despite its visible inspiration taken from Western prose.
