The content and functions of the coats of arms in St. Lawrence's Church in Zhovkva

Praca licencjacka pt. Treści i funkcje herbów w kościele św. Wawrzyńca w Żółkwi jest poświęcona herbom, które wypełniają świątynię żółkiewską ufundowaną przez hetmana wielkiego koronnego Stanisława Żółkiewskiego. Wspomniana praca została podzielona na trzy rozdziały. Pierwszy przedstawia, w jaki sposób heraldyka szlachecka kształtująca się z końcem wieku XV wywarła ogromny wpływ na szlachtę i jej codzienne życie, a więc wykorzystywanie herbów w rozmaity sposób na pomnożenie chwały własnego rodu. Drugi rozdział został poświęcony nie tylko miastu Żółkwi, ale przede wszystkim kolegiacie żółkiewskiej, głównie historii jej powstania oraz bogatego wyposażenia, które z czasem się rozproszyło. Ostatni rozdział pracy przybliża nam odpowiedź na pytania, w jakim celu hetman ufundował świątynię i dlaczego oznaczono ją herbami.

My bachelor thesis is entitled: ‘The content and functions of the coats of arms in St. Lawrence's Church in Zhovkva’. It is dedicated to the coats of arms that occupy the Zhokva temple. The church was funded by Stanisław Żołkiewski, the Grand Crown Hetman. As previously mentioned, the thesis was divided into three chapters. The first one presents the process of how nobilities’ heraldry had been forming by the end of the fifteenth’s century. It made quite an impact on the nobility and their everyday life. As a result, the coats of arms were used in various ways to increase the glory of its own kinship. Not only is the second chapter dedicated the city of Zholkva but also to the collegiate church of Zholkva. It is mostly focused on its history and the wealth of the church interiors, which scattered with time. The last chapter brings the answer to questions, in what purpose the hetman funded the temple and why it is marked with the coats of arms.
