The phenomenon of dubbing - the most common type of the audiovisual translation in Spain. The technical, historical-political and social aspect of its application and the public debate: "to dub or not to dub?" among the Spanish society

Celem niniejszej pracy było przede wszystkim przyjrzenie się zjawisku dubbingu w Hiszpanii oraz jego odbiorowi ze strony społeczeństwa, które zdaje się być mocno podzielone na dwie grupy: zwolenników i przeciwników tej wszechobecnej praktyki w ich kraju. Na początku naszej pracy zapoznajemy się z pojęciem tłumaczenia audiowizualnego oraz z najbardziej powszechnymi technikami należącymi do tego rodzaju tłumaczenia, takimi jak: dubbing, napisy lub tzw. voice-over (lektor). Następnie, przechodzimy już do szczegółowego omawiania zjawiska dubbingu. Interesuje nas jego definicja, strona techniczna związana z jego realizacją oraz aspekt historyczno-polityczny, który przyczynił się do tak silnego zakorzenienia tej techniki w Hiszpanii. W niniejszej pracy analizujemy również jak wygląda sytuacja w jakiej znajduje się obecnie przemysł dubbingu, jeśli chodzi o rynek hiszpański. Następnie, przechodzimy już do jednego z naszych głównych celów, czyli do analizy podłoża wielkiej polemiki istniejącej między społeczeństwem Hiszpanii na temat tego czy powinno się kontynuować tradycję dubbingu, czy jak najszybciej zaprzestać praktykowania tej techniki. Zapoznajemy się z dwoma punktami widzenia: z jednej strony, analizujemy opinie ekspertów, uczonych, tłumaczy, dziennikarzy i wszelakich specjalistów, czyich życie zawodowe związane jest z kinem, telewizją i/lub tłumaczeniem audiowizualnym; z drugiej zaś strony, badamy stanowisko zwykłych obywateli Hiszpanii, którzy demonstrują swoje poparcie lub sprzeciw wobec praktyki dubbingu w ich kraju przy pomocy internetu. Aby taka analiza była możliwa, przytaczamy najczęstsze komentarze, które pojawiają się pod artykułami poświęconymi technice dubbingu w Hiszpanii lub na forach o podobnej tematyce. Dzięki temu, jesteśmy w stanie wyłonić najczęściej wspominane wady oraz zalety dubbingu, a co za tym idzie, szkody i korzyści płynące z praktykowania tejże techniki w Hiszpanii. W zakończeniu przedstawia się pewne wnioski związane z całością zaprezentowanego i omówionego w tej pracy materiału.

The main aim of this thesis was, above all, observing the phenomenon of dubbing in Spain and its perception among the Spanish society who seems to be very divided into two groups: the supporters and opponents of the omnipresent dubbing in their country. In the beginning of our thesis we familiarize ourselves with the concept of the audiovisual translation and its most common techniques as: dubbing, subtitles or voice-over. Then we concentrate chiefly on the dubbing. We are interested especially in its detailed definition, technical side related to its realization and the historical-political aspect which contributed to the deep roots of this technique in Spain. In our thesis we also analyse the present situation of the dubbing industry as far as the Spanish market is concerned. Finally, we focus on one of our main aims, in other words, on the analysis of the grounds of the enormous public debate between the Spanish people: whether they should continue the tradition of dubbing in their country or desist from doing that. We get to know two points of view: on the one hand, we analyse the opinions of some experts, translators, journalists and other specialists whose working life is related to the world of cinema, television and/or audiovisual translation; on the other hand, we investigate the standpoints of the ordinary Spanish citizens who demonstrate on the internet their support or objection to the use of the dubbing in their country. To make possible that kind of analysis we quote the most common comments that are being published below some articles dedicated to the dubbing technique in Spain or in some forums devoted to similar themes. Thanks to that, we are able to enumerate the most frequently mentioned advantages and desadvantages of the dubbing and, as a result, harms and benefits connected with the application of the that type of audiovisual translation in Spain. In the final part, we present some conclusions related to the whole material that was presented and investigated in this thesis.

El objetivo del presente trabajo era, sobre todo, la observación del fenómeno del doblaje en España y de su recepción por parte de la sociedad española, que parece estar dividida en dos grupos: los partidarios y los críticos de esta práctica tan omnipresente en su país. En el mismo inicio de nuestro trabajo nos familiarizamos con el concepto de la traducción audiovisual y con sus modalidades más comunes tales como: doblaje, subtitulación o, así llamado, voice-over. A continuación, pasamos ya a una descripción más detallada del fenómeno del doblaje. Nos interesa su definición, aspecto técnico relacionado con su realización y el aspecto histórico-político que contribuyó al fuerte arraigo de esa técnica en España. En el presente trabajo analizamos también cómo es la situación actual de la industria del doblaje, si se trata del mercado español. Seguidamente, pasamos ya a uno de nuestros objetivos principales, es decir, al análisis del fondo de una gran polémica que existe dentro de la sociedad española sobre la cuestión si la tradición del doblaje debería ser continuada o abandonada lo antes posible. Nos familiarizamos con dos puntos de vista: por un lado, analizamos las opiniones de diversos expertos, doctos, traductores, periodistas y otros especialistas cuya vida profesional está vinculada al cine, a la televisión y/o a la traducción audiovisual; por otra parte, investigamos la posición de los ciudadanos de España corrientes que demuestran su apoyo u objeción ante la práctica del doblaje en su país a través de internet. Para que este tipo de análisis sea posible citamos los comentarios más frecuentes que son publicados debajo de varios artículos acerca del tema del doblaje en España o en diversos foros dedicados al mismo contenido. Gracias a eso, somos capaces de enumerar las ventajas y desventajas del doblaje que más frecuentemente se mencionan y, como consecuencia, los perjuicios y los beneficios que conlleva la práctica del doblaje en España. En la parte final, presentamos unas conclusiones finales relacionadas con la totalidad del material que hemos presentado y estudiado a lo largo del presente trabajo.
