Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest obraz Gdańska jako miejsca łączącego różne narody, kultury i tradycje, jaki Günter Grass zawarł w powieści „Blaszany bębenek” oraz w noweli „Kot i mysz”.Pierwsza część to krótki rys historyczny Gdańska z uwzględnieniem stosunków społecznych i kulturowych, jakie panowały w czasie istnienia Wolnego Miasta Gdańsk oraz II wojny światowej. Kolejne rozdziały dotyczą analizy obrazu Gdańska, jaki Grass przedstawił w powieści i noweli. Pierwszym elementem tego obrazu są topograficzne, niezwykle dokładne opisy miasta, przede wszystkim dzielnicy Wrzeszcz, a także mieszkań bohaterów. Następnie został przedstawiony obraz gdańskiego społeczeństwa. W „Blaszanym bębenku” jest ono reprezentowane przez niemiecko-polsko-kaszubską rodzinę Matzerath’ów oraz ich znajomych. Grass pokazuje w powieści zmieniające się pod wpływem idei narodowo-socjalistycznych stosunki polsko-niemieckie w Gdańsku, Kaszubów oraz Żydów. Gdańszczanie Grassa to przedstawiciele drobnomieszczaństwa, które swoją mentalnością, konformizmem, dążeniem do podniesienia swojego statusu społecznego i podwójną moralnością wsparło nazizm. W noweli natomiast społeczeństwo reprezentuje młodzież, która dorasta i szuka wzorów i ideałów w realiach II wojny światowej, a także nauczyciele. Również tutaj mamy do czynienia z cechami drobnomieszczańskimi, które najsilniej przejawiają nauczyciele. Ponadto, w dziełach Grassa poznajemy kulturę i język Gdańszczan z okresu Wolnego Miasta i wojny.Wymienione elementy tworzą całościowy obraz Gdańska. Warto jednak zauważyć, że Grass nie zajmuje się innymi dzielnicami miasta ani też innymi warstwami społecznymi.

Subject of the thesis is a picture of Gdańsk as a place which connects different nations, cultures and traditions and which Günter Grass described in his novel “The Tin Drum” and novella “Cat and Mouse”. The first chapter is a short presentation of historical issues, which reigned in the time of the Free City of Danzig and during World War II. Social and cultural relations have also been taken into account. Following chapters contain an analysis of Gdańsk picture, which Grass created in his novel and novella. The first components of that picture are topographical, extraordinarily accurate descriptions of the city, particulary of Wrzeszcz district area. Next, a picture of Gdansk society is presented. The society in “The Tin Drum” is represented by the German-Polish-Kashubian family Matzerath and their relatives. Grass outlines how Polish-German relations, have changed in Gdańsk under Nazi influence. He portrays also Kashubians and Jews. Because of its mentality, double standards, conformity and pursuit of higher social position, the society of Gdańsk, particularly its lower-middle class, supported the Nazi regime. The society in the short novel is represented by teachers and youth, who had to look for their own ideals and examples to follow during World War II. Characters of “Cat and Mouse”, especially teachers, are portraiting the lower-middle class as well. Furthermore, Grass describes the culture and language of Gdansk society.The above mentioned elements create an integral picture of Gdańsk in Grass’ books. It is worth to notice that Grass mainly focuses on Wrzeszcz and its lower-middle class; no other part of the city is described so accurately and no other social class is described.
