"I feel what you feel" - factors that influence rubber hand illusion

Niniejsza praca poddaje dyskusji najbardziej rozpowszechnione wyjaśnienie teoretyczne efektu iluzji gumowej ręki odnoszące się do integracji multisensorycznej. Potwierdzony w wielu badaniach efekt iluzji jest zróżnicowany indywidualnie a nieliczne badania wskazują na empatię, jako dodatkowy czynnik, który wpływa na tę różnorodność. Najczęstszym wyjaśnieniem tych wyników jest koncentracja uwagi, co zgodne jest z najnowszymi doniesieniami proponującymi uwzględnienie poziomu funkcjonowania procesów poznawczych w dyskusji na temat mechanizmów stojących za iluzją gumowej ręki. Niniejsze badanie ma na celu sprawdzenie czy wpływ empatii można wyjaśnić poprzez zdolności uwagowe czy są to dwa niezależnie wpływające czynniki. U każdego z uczestników badania zmierzony został poziom empatii (Indeks Reaktywności Interpersonalnej) oraz zdolność do przekierowywania uwagi (zadanie komputerowe task switching). Uczestnicy zostali poddani procedurze indukowania iluzji gumowej ręki a siła efektu została zmierzona za pomocą dryfu proprioceptywnego oraz Kwestionariusza Wrażeń z Eksperymentu. Wyniki badania wskazują na wpływ empatii emocjonalnej na siłę iluzji gumowej ręki natomiast jeśli chodzi o korelację zdolności do przerzucania uwagi ujawnia się ona w stopniu marginalnym. Wyniki świadczą o tym, że procesy wyższego rzędu lepiej wyjaśniają zmienność wyników niż proste procesy uwagowe.

This paper discusses the most common theoretical explanation of the rubber hand illusion effect regarding multi-sensory integration. The illusion effect confirmed in many studies is diversified individually and few studies indicate empathy as an additional factor that influences this diversity. The most frequent explanation of these results is the concentration of attention. The present research is to check whether the influence of empathy can be explained by attention or whether they are two independently influencing factors. The level of empathy (Interpersonal Reactivity Index) and the ability to redirect attention (task switching on computer) were measured. Participants were subjected to the procedure of inducing the illusion of a rubber hand and the strength of the effect was measured by means of a proprioceptive drift and the Questionnaire of Experiences from the Experiment. The results of the study indicate the influence of emotional empathy on the strength of the rubber hand illusion, but when it comes to the correlation with the ability to shift attention, it becomes marginal. The results show that higher-order processes better explain the variability of results than simple attentional processes.
