Problems of translation of Julian Tuwim's poem "Locomotive" . A comparative analysis of selected English translations

Niniejsza praca magisterska obejmuje problematykę przekładu wiersza Juliana Tuwima „Lokomotywa” oraz analizę porównawczą dwóch wybranych przekładów na język angielski. Praca zawiera charakterystykę literatury dziecięcej i jej translatorykę, opis startegii i technik tłumaczeniowych w perspektywie tłumaczenia literatury dziecięcej, a także środki stylistyczne odpowiadające warstwie dźwiękowej wiersza. Celem niniejszej pracy było udowodnienie, iż pomimo problemów tłumaczeniowych takich jak warstwa dźwiękowa wiersza, jego brzmienie oraz dynamika, tłumacz jest w stanie zachować te elementy poprzez użycie odpowiednich startegii oraz technik tłumaczeniowych, tj. redukcja, kompensacja, substytucja oraz szeroko pojęta definicja. Autorka podzieliła startegie tłumaczeniowe na bycie „widzialnym”, bądź „niewidzialnym” tłumaczem, co również przyczyniło się do jakości wiersza Juliana Tuwima. Meritum pracy była analiza dwóch wybranych przekładów wiersza pod kątem strategii oraz technik tłumaczeniowych. Autorka opisała oraz oceniła wybór strategii tłumaczniowych oraz ostatecznie oceniła całość przetłumaczonego wiersza. Autorce udało się również odpowiedzieć na postawione pytania oraz zrealizować wyznaczone cele. Analiza udowodniła, iż decyzja o byciu „widzialnym”, bądź „niewidzialnym” tłumaczem, wpływa na warstwę dźwiękową wiersza, która ukazała się niewątpliwym problemem tłumaczeniowym w wierszu „Lokomotywa”. Jednak dalsze badania nad tłumaczeniem warstwy dźwiękowej wiersza mogłyby potwierdzić przyjętą tezę oraz pogłębić problematykę przekładu literatury dziecięcej.

This Master's Thesis concerns the problem of translation of Julian Tuwim's poem "Locomotive" and a comparative analysis of two chosen English translations. The thesis includes the characteristics of children's literature and its translation, a description of translation strategies and techniques from the perspective of children's literature translation, as well as stylistic means corresponding to the sound layer of the poem. The objective of this study was to prove that despite translation problems such as the poem's sound layer, its tone and dynamics, the translator can preserve these elements by using appropriate translation strategies and techniques, i.e., reduction, compensation, substitution, and broad definition. The author divided the translation strategies into being a "visible" or "invisible" translator, which also contributed to the quality of Julian Tuwim's poem. The essence of the study was the analysis of two selected translations of the poem in terms of translation strategies and techniques. The author has presented and evaluated the choice of translation strategies and evaluated the final version of translated poem. The author has managed to answer the questions posed and to meet the objectives set. The analysis has shown that the decision to be a "visible" or "invisible" translator affects the sound layer of the poem, which appeared as an undoubted translation problem in the poem "Locomotive". However, further research on the translation of the sound layer of the poem could confirm the adopted thesis and deepen the problem of translation of children's literature.
