Jako cudzoziemiec mieszkający w Polsce zauważyłem od razu pewne różnice w kwestii relacji między płcią męską i żeńską. Wtedy nie byłem jeszcze pewien ale pomyślałem, że może miało to coś wspólnego z historią albo kulturą. Podczas burzliwej przeszłości Polski wizerunek rodziny utrwalił się w kraju jako symbol trwałości narodu. Nawet dziś, jest jeszcze wysoko ceniona jako podstawa szczęścia. Ale do jakiego stopnia dokładnie są stare rodzinne wzrory widoczne we współczesnej Polsce? Celem tej pracy jest określenie wizerunku Matki Polki, stereotyp tradycyjnej polskiej matki, w małżeństwach wsród najmłodszego pokolenia rodziców. Wykorzystałem dane zbierane z 21 wywiadów z młodymi polskimi matkami i ojcami, aby się dowiedzieć czy i do jakiego stopnia tradycyjne role płci były obecne w ich małżeństwach – zwłaszcza pod względem kobiet i stereotypu Matki Polki. Wniosek do którego doszedłem był taki, że kobiety generalnie przyjmują więcej obowiązków związanych z domem i rodziną z powodu dwóch głównych czynników: większego zaangażowania mężczyzn w kwestie zawodowe oraz presji społocznej i kulturowej. Sytuacja powoli ulega zmianie, ale zanim kobiety będą mogły pochwalić się równouprawnieniem, trzeba będzie pogodzić teraźnieszość z przeszłością.

As a foreigner from the US living in Poland, I noticed right away that there was something subtly yet indescribably different about gender relations here. I was not sure at the time, but I thought it may have something to do with the history or culture. During its turbulent past, Poland clung to the family as a beacon of national preservation and identity. And even today, it is still highly valued as a mainstay of happiness. But to what extent exactly are old family patterns visible in the modern-day Poland? The purpose of this thesis is to determine the visibility of Matka Polka (Mother-Pole), the stereotype of a traditional Polish mother figure, in marriages among the youngest generation of parents. I took data collected from 21 interviews with young Polish mothers and fathers to find out if and to what extent traditional gender roles were present in their marriages - especially with respect to women and the Matka Polka stereotype. The conclusion I came to was that women still generally take on more duties related to family and home due to two main factors: the higher working demands the economy places on men; and pressures from society and culture. Things are changing, but before women in Poland can truly boast gender equality, the past and the present will have to reconcile their differences.
