Praca ma na celu przedstawienie zmian społecznych, które zaszły w Wielkiej Bryta-nii w okresie międzywojennym i które są zilustrowane przez D.H. Lawrence’a w „Kochanku Lady Chatterley” i Nancy Mitford w „Pogoni za miłością”. Praca pokazuje obraz klas wyż-szych, średnich i robotniczych i pokazuje zmieniający się układ sił pomiędzy nimi. Praca bada pogarszającą się pozycję arystokracji, dojście do władzy przez klasę średnią, a także popularność socjalistycznych idei wśród klasy robotniczej. Ponadto, pokazano kobiecą drogę do emancypacji oraz wolności seksualnej i osobistej.Pierwszy rozdział koncentruje się na kontekście historycznym - bada ewolucję klas społecznych i władzę, a następnie upadek arystokracji. Krótko omówiono sytuację kobiet w XIX i na początku XX wieku, która doprowadziła do ich niezależności.Drugi rozdział analizuje „Kochanka Lady Chatterley” D.H. Lawrence’a i prezentuje wszystkie klasy, z naciskiem na arystokrację. Pokazuje walkę klas i rosnącą klasową świa-domość wśród klasy robotniczej, jak również kobiecą drogę do emancypacji i wolności.Trzeci rozdział pokazuje ekscentryczność i nieodpowiedzialność arystokracji zilu-strowaną w „Pogoni za miłością” Nancy Mitford. Analizuję jak arystokracja traci swoją po-zycję i stopniowo jest zastępowana przez dobrze wykształconą i pracowitą klasę średnią. Ponadto analizuje wyzwalające konwencje społeczne w epoce jazzu i rosnącą niezależność kobiet.

The thesis aims at analysing the representation of the social change in interwar Britain illustrated in Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D.H. Lawrence and The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford. It shows the portrayal of the upper-, middle- and working-classes and the power struggle between them. It examines the diminishing position of the aristocracy and the ascendancy of the middle-class as well as the popularity of socialist ideas among the working-class. Moreover, the thesis shows the female strife for emancipation and sexual as well as personal freedom. The first chapter focuses on the historical context – it examines the evolution of the social classes and the ascendancy as well as decline of the aristocratic rule. It also briefly discusses the situation of women in the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries that led to the female emancipation. The second chapter investigates the portrayal of all the classes, with an emphasis on the aristocracy, that is presented in D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover. It shows class-struggle and the growing class-consciousness among the working-class as well as the female journey to emancipation and freedom. The third chapter shows the inadequacy and whimsical irresponsibility of the aristocracy that is illustrated in Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love’s. It shows how the class is losing its power and how its position is being replaced by the highly educated and hard-working middle-class. Moreover, it analyses the liberating social conventions in the Jazz Age and female growing independence and encouragement to education and professional work.
