Emily Dickinson była zafascynowana tematem śmierci. Z ponad 1800 wierszy, które napisała w ciągu swojego życia, prawie 600 jest poświęcone rozmyślaniom nad fenomenem śmierci i umierania. Jej obsesja tematem wywodzi się z doświadczeń straty. Dickinson w młodym wieku straciła wiele przyjaciół, a w późniejszych latach także członków rodziny. Emily Dickinson w swoich utworach prezentuje kilka różnych podejść do tematu śmierci. W wielu wierszach poetka personifikuje śmierć i przedstawia to zjawisko jako bohatera literackiego: występuje on jako zalotnik, kochanek, a czasami jako demokrata. W kolejnej kategorii utworów, Dickinson skupia się na przedstawieniu motywu łoża śmierci. Autorka opisuje te sceny z perspektywy osoby umierającej, spoczywającej na łożu. Poetka pisze również z punktu widzenia osób otaczających łoże śmierci ukochanej osoby. Opisuje ona utratę bliskich i emocje towarzyszące takiej sytuacji. W swojej pracy, poprzez analizę wybranych utworów autorstwa Emily Dickinson, badam jej podejście i zrozumienie tematu śmierci.

Emily Dickinson was fascinated with the subject of death. Out of almost 1,800 poems she constructed in her lifetime, almost 600 are dedicated to the contemplation of the phenomenon of dying and death. Her obsession with the topic comes from the early experiences of losing her friends, and later in life, her family members. While writing about death, Emily Dickinson chose several different approaches. In a number of poems she personifies death and presents it as a literary character: a male suitor, a lover, and sometimes, as a democrat. In another category of her death poems, the poet discusses deathbed scenes. She presents those scenes as perceived by the person who is about to die. Dickinson also writes from the perspective of a person attending the bedside of a dying lover, a friend or a family member. The poet describes the experience of loss and the emotions accompanying the situation. In this thesis, by analyzing a number of Emily Dickinson’s poems, I examine the poet’s attitude towards death and her understanding of the subject.
