The aim of the article is to attempt to characterize ugliness in Patrycja Pustkowiak’s novel "Maszkaron". Ugliness is the focal point of the book and affects the heroine and the world around her. It also becomes the basis for constructing identity and defines Marianna’s position in society. Ugliness connects the heroine’s inner experiences with the outside world. However, most importantly, it allows us to define Marianna as a person only similar to people, which will provide grounds for trying to understand the function of violence presented in the text.
