Linguistic exponents of the category "Searching for a place to settle a swarm" in Slavic beekeeping terminology

Celem artykułu jest opisanie semantyki oraz pochodzenia, odnotowanych w materiałach północno-wschodniej Polski oraz wschodniosłowiańskim materiale dialektalnym, terminów bartniczych z pola leksykalno-semantycznego "Poszukiwanie miejsca na osiedlenie się roju". Specjalną uwagą objęty został termin brus. iск ‘pszczeli zwiad’ oraz jego formy pochodne, stanowiące synonim dla wschodniosłowiańskiego скаль, скалья i jego derywatów. Na podstawie materiałów historycznych języków wschodniosłowiańskich oraz wcześniejszych hipotez etymologicznych artykuł wiąże znaczenie opisywanych terminów z czasownikiem искать ‘szukać’, zestawiając je z paralelnym semantycznie lit. íeškonės ‘zwiady wśród pszczół, pszczoły, które w czasie wyrojenia lecą szukać nowego siedliska’. Obserwacja materiału białoruskiego na tle słowiańskim pozwala uznać formę iск za ograniczony dialektalnie do obszarów białoruskich derywat wsteczny od opisywanej podstawy czasownikowej oraz opisać ten termin jako możliwą pożyczkę semantyczną z języka litewskiego, stanowiącą przykład archaizmu językowego słowiańskiej terminologii bartniczej.

The purpose of this article is to describe the semantics and origins of the beekeeping terms in the lexical-semantic field "Searching for a place to settle a swarm", recorded in the materials of northeastern Poland and East Slavic dialectal material. Special attention was paid to the Belarussian term iск ‘bee scouts’ and its derivative forms, which are synonymous with the East Slavic скаль, скалья and its derivatives. On the basis of historical materials of East Slavic languages and earlier etymological hypotheses, the article relates the meaning of the terms described to the verb искать ‘to seek’, juxtaposing them with the semantically parallel Lithuanian íeškonės ‘scouting groups among the bees, bees that fly to seek a new habitat at the time of hatching’. Observation of the Belarusian material against the Slavic background makes it possible to consider the form iск as a dialectally restricted to Belarusian areas derivative backwards from the described verb base, and to describe the term as a possible semantic loan from Lithuanian, exemplifying the linguistic archaism of Slavic beekeeping terminology.
