Expanding the field of vision : the novel "Jasenovac" by Ljubo Jandrić in the context of ecocriticism

Artykuł poświęcony został mało znanej literackiej reprezentacji rzeczywistości obozowej, a mianowicie wydanej w 1980 r. powieści "Jasenovac" Ljuby Jandricia. W powieści zaprezentowany został stosunkowo rzadki punkt widzenia na sytuację internowania, a mianowicie perspektywa komendanta obozu. Jednak oryginalność utworu polega na akcentowaniu przez autora przyrodniczych uwarunkowań działań ludobójczych. Przyroda przedstawiana jest jako ważny czynnik w funkcjonowaniu obozu. Uwaga w artykule zostaje również poświęcona zmysłom (wzroku, słuchu i węchu) jako tym elementom świata przedstawionego, za pomocą których autor przekazuje doświadczenie obozowej makabry. W tekście uwzględniony został postulat czytania retrospektywnego (Aleksandra Ubertowska), które pozwala na przywrócenie odbiorcy tekstów przeoczonych, umożliwia przeczytanie ich w nowy sposób i wskazanie wynikających z nich (nieoczywistych) sensów.

This article focuses on a more obscure literary representation of concentration camp reality: the novel "Jasenovac" by Ljubo Jandrić (1980), which presents an unusual perspective on the realities of internment, from the viewpoint of the camp commander. However, the originality of the work lies in the author’s emphasis on how natural conditions influence genocidal actions: here, nature is portrayed as a significant factor in the functioning of the camp. The article also reveals how the senses (sight, hearing, and smell) function as elements of the depicted world, through which the author conveys the horrific experience of the camp itself. The article emphasizes the need for retrospective readings (Aleksandra Ubertowska), thus allowing readers to be reintroduced to overlooked texts, enabling their reinterpretation and pointing out their (non-obvious) meanings.
