This paper undertakes an interdisciplinary analysis of Jean-Dominique Bauby’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, examining the text both as a testimony of a liminal bodily condition and as a literary inscription of spiritual agency. The central problem addressed concerns the possibility of preserving subjectivity and meaning in the context of radical suffering that suspends nearly all avenues of physical action and communicative expression. The interpretative framework integrates existential psychology and trauma studies, drawing on Viktor E. Frankl’s logotherapy, Richard Tedeschi and Lawrence Calhoun’s theory of posttraumatic growth, and Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s stage model of grief, while also employing tools from autobiographical theory and illness narrative research. Such an approach allows the text to be interpreted as a site of integrating suffering through language and narrative, where the act of writing functions simultaneously as resistance to biological determinism and as a mechanism of identity reconstruction. The findings demonstrate that even under extreme conditions of corporeal incapacity, it is possible not only to safeguard personal integrity but also to attain spiritual development and a revaluation of existence. In this light, Bauby’s work is situated within broader debates on testimonial literature, trauma psychology, and medical humanities, offering a significant contribution to reflection on the interrelations of suffering, narrative, and the human condition.
