Paul Atreides on Judah's Rock, or Threads of Polish Romanticism in Film Adaptations of “Dune”

Praca licencjacka pt. Paul Atryda na Judahu skale, czyli wątki polskiego romantyzmu w filmowych adaptacjach „Diuny”, analizuje podobieństwa między filmami na podstawie Diuny Franka Herberta, w reżyserii Davida Lyncha (1984) oraz Denisa Villeneuve’a (2021, 2024), a polskim romantyzmem. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy przedstawia wybrane konteksty polityczno-społeczne, a także literackie obecne w polskim romantyzmie. Drugi rozdział skupia się na świecie przedstawionym filmów, porównując go z utworami literackimi polskich wieszczów i zawartych w nich koncepcjach politycznych, a także wątków metafizycznych. Trzeci rozdział traktuje o bohaterach filmowych, szczególnie Paulu Atrydzie, analizując go przez pryzmat polskiego rewolucjonisty-poety, mickiewiczowskiej wizji mesjasza, a także wampira. W drodze analizy dostrzeżono podobieństwa między polskim romantyzmem, a filmowymi adaptacjami Diuny na podstawie następujących wątków: sposobem kreacji świata przedstawionego, motywami orientalnymi, politycznymi oraz czerpaniem z przeszłych epok literackich i historycznych – zwłaszcza Średniowiecza oraz Antyku. Zaobserwowano także podobne podejście (zależnie od adaptacji filmowej) do wizji mesjasza-rewolucjonisty, jego krytykę oraz sposób kreowania figury zbawiciela, a ponadto dostrzeżono w postaci Paula Atrydy cechy bohatera wampirycznego.

Bachelor's thesis entitled Paul Atreides on Judah's Rock, or Threads of Polish Romanticism in Film Adaptations of “Dune”, analyses the similarities between films based on Frank Herbert's Dune, directed by David Lynch (1984) and Denis Villeneuve (2021, 2024), and Polish Romanticism. The work consists of three chapters. The first presents selected political, social and literary contexts present in Polish Romanticism. The second chapter focuses on the world presented in the films, comparing it with the literary works of Polish poets and the political concepts contained in them, as well as metaphysical themes. The third chapter deals with film characters, especially Paul Atreides, analysing him through the prism of a Polish revolutionary-poet, Mickiewicz's vision of the messiah, and also a vampire. The analysis noted similarities between Polish Romanticism and film adaptations of Dune on the basis of the following themes: the way the world depicted is created, oriental and political motifs, and drawing on past literary and historical eras – especially the Middle Ages and Antiquity. A similar approach (depending on the film adaptation) to the vision of the messiah-revolutionary, his criticism and the way of creating the figure of the saviour were also observed, and in addition, the features of a vampire hero were noticed in the character of Paul Atreides.
