Clash of Civilizations or Clash of Interpretations? A Comparative Analysis of Samuel Huntington’s and Edward Said’s Concepts in the Context of the Theory and Practice of International Relations

Praca analizuje koncepcje Edwarda W. Saida i Samuela P. Huntingtona w kontekście teorii stosunków międzynarodowych, zestawiając ich odmiennie ugruntowane wizje konfliktów kulturowych. Said postrzega Orient i Zachód jako konstrukty dyskursywne, reprodukujące relacje władzy i dominacji, podczas gdy Huntington traktuje cywilizacje jako realne, trwałe jednostki analizy, które determinują dynamikę świata po zimnej wojnie. W pracy zastosowano metodę jakościowej analizy porównawczej, koncentrując się na pięciu wymiarach: ontologicznym, epistemologicznym, genezy konfliktu, normatywnym oraz meta-teoretycznym. Z analizy wynika, że Said odsłania mechanizmy ideologiczne, które stoją za produkcją wiedzy i legitymizacją władzy, natomiast Huntington buduje narrację ostrzegającą przed nieuchronnością starcia cywilizacji. Zestawienie obu podejść pozwala zrozumieć, w jaki sposób teorie nie tylko opisują, ale również współtworzą praktykę stosunków międzynarodowych.

The thesis examines the concepts of Edward W. Said and Samuel P. Huntington within the framework of international relations theory, comparing their fundamentally different views on cultural conflicts. Said perceives the Orient and the West as discursive constructs that reproduce relations of power and domination, while Huntington treats civilizations as real, enduring units of analysis that shape the dynamics of the post–Cold War world. The study employs a qualitative comparative method, focusing on five dimensions: ontology, epistemology, conflict genesis, normativity, and meta-theoretical reflection. The analysis shows that Said reveals the ideological mechanisms behind the production of knowledge and the legitimization of power, whereas Huntington constructs a narrative warning of the inevitability of civilizational clashes. Juxtaposing these approaches highlights how theories not only describe but also actively shape the practice of international relations.
