Vodou and Santeria: A comparative analysis of ritual practices and contemporary challenges

Praca analizuje Vodou i Santerię jako synkretyczne religie afrokaraibskie powstałe w kontekście niewolnictwa i kolonializmu. Głównym celem jest porównanie ich praktyk rytualnych i struktur teologicznych oraz ukazanie współczesnych wyzwań, przed którymi stoją obie tradycje religijne. Rozdział I rekonstruuje tło historyczne: niewolnictwo, rewolucję haitańską oraz kubańską walkę o niepodległość, podkreślając rolę synkretyzmu Vodou i Santerii z katolicyzmem jako strategii przetrwania. Rozdział II porównuje kluczowe założenia: wieloaspektową koncepcję osoby w Vodou, energię ashe w Santerii, panteony bóstw i struktury kapłaństwa. Rozdział III koncentruje się na szczegółowej analizie porównawczej rytuałów, w tym dywinacji, leczeniu, inicjacji, ofierze, opętaniu, muzyce, tańcu, modlitwach, pieśniach i obrzędach pogrzebowych. Rozdział IV bada współczesność: legitymizację prawną, negatywny wizerunek w mediach, adaptację cyfrową, turystykę religijną, transformację w diasporze oraz poszukiwanie autentyczności.

This thesis analyzes Vodou and Santeria as syncretic Afro-Caribbean religions that emerged from the context of slavery and colonialism. Its primary aim is to compare their ritual practices and theological structures, and to present the contemporary challenges both religious traditions face. Chapter I reconstructs the historical background of their development: slavery, the Haitian Revolution, and Cuba's struggle for independence, highlighting the role of syncretism of Vodou and Santeria with Catholicism as a strategy for cultural survival. Chapter II provides a comparative analysis of their fundamental tenets: the multifaceted concept of the person in Vodou, the vital energy of ashe in Santeria, their respective pantheons of deities, and their priesthood structures. Chapter III focuses on a detailed comparative examination of rituals, including divination, healing, initiation, sacrifice, spirit possession, music, dance, prayers, songs, and funerary rites. Chapter IV investigates their contemporary situation, addressing issues of legal legitimization, negative media portrayals, digital adaptation, religious tourism, transformation within the global diaspora, and the internal quest for authenticity.
