Audio description in horror movies: case study of „The Orphanage”

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest audiodeskrypcji filmów grozy. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono charakterystykę audiodeskrypcji, obejmującą jej definicję, związek z przekładoznawstwem oraz sposób jej realizacji. Drugi rozdział koncentruje się na kinie grozy, opisując jego cele oraz środki, które pozwalają wywołać napięcie i silne emocje u widza. Trzeci rozdział przedstawia analizę audiodeskrypcji horroru “Sierociniec” (2007) w reżyserii J. A. Bayony, badając, w jaki sposób treści wizualne są przekazywane osobom z niepełnosprawnością wzroku. Zwrócono uwagę na stosowane techniki i styl audiodeskrypcji oraz na wyzwania charakterystyczne dla gatunku, wskazując jednocześnie możliwości poprawy jakości tego typu tłumaczenia.

This thesis focuses on the audio description of horror films. The first chapter presents the characterization of audio description, including its definition, its connection to the field of translation studies, and the method of its implementation. The second chapter focuses on horror cinema, describing its purposes and the resources it uses to create tension and strong emotional responses in the audience. The third chapter analyzes the audio description of the horror film “The Orphanage” (2007), directed by J. A. Bayona, examining how visual content is conveyed to people with visual impairments. Special attention is paid to the techniques and styles employed, as well as the specific challenges of the genre, while also pointing out opportunities for improving the quality of this type of translation.

El presente trabajo se dedica al tema de la audiodescripción de las películas de terror. El primer capítulo presenta la caracterización de la audiodescripción, ofreciendo información sobre su definición, su relación con los estudios de traducción y el modo de su realización. El segundo capítulo se centra en el cine de terror, describiendo sus objetivos y los recursos mediante los cuales se logra generar tensión y emociones intensas en el espectador. En el tercer capítulo se lleva a cabo un análisis de la audiodescripción de la película de terror “El Orfanato” (2007) de J. A. Bayona, examinando cómo se transmiten los contenidos visuales a las personas con discapacidad visual. Se presta especial atención a las técnicas y estilos empleados, así como a los desafíos característicos del género, señalando posibles vías para mejorar la calidad de este tipo de traducción.
