The great battles of Alexander of Macedon and their tactical analysis

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest analizie taktycznej największych bitew Aleksandra Macedońskiego. Jednemu z najwybitniejszych umysłów militarnych w historii. Przedstawia i konfrontuje ze sobą wybrane opisy źródłowe, należące do klasycznej historiografii (Flawiusz Arrian, Diodor Sycylijski, Kwintus Kurcjusz Rufus, Plutarch, Justyn) oraz wykorzystuje również przemyślenia współczesnych badaczy. Próbuje zastanowić się, co tkwiło w fenomenie macedońskiej armii i Aleksandrze Wielkim, że pokonała ona potężne imperium Achemenidów. Poszukiwania sięgają jego ojca – Filipa II i jego reform. Następnie dopiero rozważa poczynania Aleksandra, jego batalie i dwa oblężenia.

The present study is devoted to a tactical analysis of the major battles of Alexander the Great, one of the most eminent military minds in history. It examines and juxtaposes selected source accounts from classical historiography (Flavius Arrian, Diodorus Siculus, Quintus Curtius Rufus, Plutarch, and Justin), while also incorporating the insights of modern scholarship. The investigation seeks to determine the foundations of the Macedonian army’s and Alexander’s extraordinary effectiveness, which enabled them to overcome the powerful Achaemenid Empire. To this end, the inquiry first considers the role of Philip II and his reforms, before turning to Alexander’s own campaigns, his battles, and two major sieges.
