Analysis of difficulties in translating of the Old French text to Polish language on the example of "Le Devisement du monde" by Marco Polo

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie trudności, z jakimi styka się tłumacz podczas przekładu na język polski tekstu, który w oryginale powstał w języku starofrancuskim. Na przykładzie analizy tłumaczenia II księgi Le devisement du monde Marco Polo, sporządzonego na potrzeby pracy magisterskiej zatytułowanej Wokół tłumaczenia II księgi Le devisement du monde Marco Polo, przedstawione zostaną dwa główne typy problemów wyodrębnionych podczas pracy nad tekstem. Są to trudności leksykalne oraz stylistyczne. W odniesieniu do dzieła Marco Polo istotne jest spotkanie trzech odrębnych kultur i sposobów myślenia. Chodzi tu przede wszystkim o sposób postrzegania świata przez trzynastowiecznego podróżnika, ludy, z którymi się zetknął, oraz autorkę przekładu i jego odbiorców. Przekład dzieła powstał na bazie edycji krytycznej pod kierunkiem Philippe'a Ménarda. Podczas późniejszej analizy przekładu odniosłam się również do adaptacji dzieła na współczesny język francuski sporządzonej przez Pierre'a-Yves'a Badela zatytułowanej La description du monde.

The aim of this article is to present the difficulties encountered by a translator during the translation to Polish of the text originally written in Old French. On the example of analysis of the translation of the second book of Le devisement du monde by Marco Polo - prepared for the purposes of the master's thesis entitled: Around the translation of the second book of Le devisement du monde by Marco Polo - two main types of problems identified while working on the text are presented. These are lexical and stylistic difficulties. In relation to Marco Polo's work the encounter of three different cultures and ways of thinking is also important. It is primarily about the way the world is perceived by the thirteenth-century traveler, the peoples he came across, the author of the translation and its recipients. The translation of the work was based on a critical edition under the direction of Philippe Ménard. During the subsequent analysis of the translation, the translator referred also to the adaptation of the work to contemporary French entitled La description du monde prepared by Pierre-Yves Badel.
