Tower Houses in Medieval and Early Modern Ireland from the Perspective of Historical Archaeology

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza obecnego stanu wiedzy na temat obiektów typu tower house z obszaru wyspy Irlandia. Celem badań było ukazanie hipotez na temat genezy tej formy zamku, cech, które charakteryzują ten typ oraz przedstawienie istniejących w literaturze prób typologii. Autor podjął także próbę znalezienia cech formalnych, które wskazywałyby na pochodzenie etniczne fundatora zamku i jego status społeczny. Autor wykazuje, że założenia typu tower house były najpowszechniejszym typem siedzib obronnych w późnośredniowiecznej Irlandii, a ich popularność wynikała z funkcjonalności i uniwersalności. Geneza domów wieżowych pozostaje jednak zagadnieniem otwartym, wymagającym dalszych badań archeologicznych.

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the current state of knowledge about tower house structures on the island of Ireland. The research focused on presenting hypotheses regarding the origins of this type of castle, identifying the features that characterize it, and discussing typological approaches found in the literature. The author also attempted to identify formal traits that could indicate the ethnic background and social status of the castle’s founder. The study shows that tower houses were the most widespread type of defensive residence in late medieval Ireland, and their popularity stemmed from their functionality and versatility. However, the origins of tower houses remain an open question, requiring further archaeological research.
