Niniejsza praca „Epidemia AIDS w USA oraz obraz procesów sądowych i stosunku do osób zakażonych wirusem HIV w latach 80. i 90. XX w. na podstawie filmu „Filadelfia”” podejmuje tematykę kryzysu epidemiologicznego spowodowanego wirusem HIV w Stanach Zjednoczonych w dwóch ostatnich dekadach XX wieku. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono także realiom procesów sądowych w ówczesnej epoce oraz ich zestawieniu z postępowaniem ukazanym w filmie Jonathana Demme’a, skupiając się równocześnie na stosunku do osób zakażonych owym wirusem, w tym społeczności LGBTQ+, na przestrzeni dekad. Ważnym elementem pracy jest także omówienie podejścia władz USA do epidemii AIDS oraz prowadzonej wówczas polityki wobec zagrożenia, w tym skutków podjętych działań prewencyjnych. Następnie skupiono się na analizie filmu „Filadelfia” - jego stylistyce, odbioru w latach 90., aż po ukazany w nim proces sądowy, wszczęty przez Andrew Becketta, prawnika chorego na AIDS, zwolnionego z pracy niedługo po otrzymaniu diagnozy. Końcowa część pracy przedstawia ewolucję epidemii HIV i AIDS w USA w XXI wieku oraz przełomowe momenty w walce z wirusem. This paper, "The AIDS epidemic in the USA and the depiction of legal proceedings and attitudes towards people infected with HIV in the 1980s and 1990s based on the film “Philadelphia"", addresses the issue of the epidemiological crisis caused by the HIV virus in the United States during the last two decades of the 20th century. Particular attention is devoted to the realities of court trials of that era and their comparison with the proceedings depicted in Jonathan Demme’s film, while simultaneously focusing on the attitudes toward people infected with the virus, including the LGBTQ+ community, over the decades. An important element of the paper is also the discussion of the U.S. government’s approach to the AIDS epidemic and the policies pursued at the time in response to the threat, including the effects of preventive measures taken. The analysis then turns to the film Philadelphia—its stylistics, its reception in the 1990s, and the courtroom trial initiated by Andrew Beckett, a lawyer suffering from AIDS who was dismissed from his job shortly after receiving his diagnosis. The final part of the paper presents the evolution of the HIV and AIDS epidemic in the United States in the 21st century and the breakthrough moments in the fight against the virus. It also discusses the contemporary reception of Philadelphia, considering today’s attitudes toward people living with HIV and members of the LGBTQ+ community and their legal situation, as well as the growing availability of educational materials on HIV/AIDS.
