Invective in Demosthenes’ On the Crown: A Semantic and Literary Analysis

Głównym celem pracy jest zebranie i analiza fragmentów inwektywicznych w mowie „O wieńcu” Demostenesa. Autor przeprowadza analizę słownictwa, konotacji kulturowych i literackich wybranych pojęć inwektywicznych mowy. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawione zostało tło historyczne i układ mowy „O wieńcu”, a także definicja pojęcia „inwektywa”. W drugim obelgi dotyczące samych wyzwisk i uczciwości przeciwnika. W trzecim kwestia zdrady ojczyzny. W czwartym rodziny i pierwszych zajęć Ajschinesa. W piątym pojedyncze wyrazy wykorzystywane w mowie jako wyzwiska. Język Demostenejskiej inwektywy z jednej strony jest typowy dla retoryki IV wieku p.n.e., z drugiej zawiera wiele odważnych i nowatorskich wyrażeń, a także odniesień w szczególności do komedii starej.

The primary objective of this study is the collection and analysis of invective passages in Demosthenes’ “On the Crown”. The author undertakes an examination of the vocabulary, as well as the cultural and literary connotations of selected invective expressions employed in the speech. The first chapter outlines the historical background and structure of “On the Crown” and provides a definition of the concept of “invective.” The second chapter addresses insults pertaining to verbal abuse and the opponent’s integrity. The third focuses on the issue of treason against polis. The fourth examines Aeschines’ family background and his early occupations. The fifth considers individual terms used within the speech as forms of insult. Demosthenes’ invective language is, on the one hand, characteristic of the fourth-century BCE rhetoric, while on the other, it encompasses numerous bold and innovative expressions, as well as some nota-ble references to the Old Comedy.
