Folk interpretation of madness

Artykuł to prezentacja jak w społeczności wiejskiej - chłopskiej kulturze tradycyjnej odbierano szaleństwo. Autor opiera się na materiałach etnograficznych. Pokazuje, jaką rolę na wsi pełnili "wiejscy głupkowie". Autor nie analizuje kwestii choroby umysłowej, ale raczej siłę stereotypu. Bowiem do kategorii ludzi szalonych zaliczano także osoby niekoniecznie chore psychicznie, co przede wszystkim odstawające od normy.

The article presents how madness was perceived in rural communities and traditional peasant culture. The author draws on ethnographic materials. He shows the role played by ‘village fools’ in rural areas. The author does not analyse the issue of mental illness, but rather the power of stereotypes. This is because the category of mentally ill people also included individuals who were not necessarily mentally ill, but primarily those who deviated from the norm.
