Analysis of the translation of British English and slang in the first season of Peaky Blinders (voiceover and subtitled version)

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest problematyce tłumaczenia brytyjskiej odmiany języka angielskiego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem przekładu slangu w serialu Peaky Blinders. Brytyjski angielski różni się od innych wariantów języka nie tylko na poziomie leksykalnym i gramatycznym, ale także fonetycznym i kulturowym. Tłumacz mierzy się z wyzwaniami takimi jak idiomatyczność, różnice w wymowie regionalnej (np. akcenty Black Country czy Brummie), a także z koniecznością przeniesienia kontekstu społecznego i kulturowego na grunt języka docelowego. Szczególną trudność stanowi tłumaczenie slangu, który jest nieformalny, zmienny i silnie związany z tożsamością grup społecznych. Celem pracy jest analiza sposobów, w jakie tłumacze wersji lektorskiej i napisowej pierwszego sezonu Peaky Blinders poradzili sobie z przekładem fraz slangowych oraz elementów charakterystycznych dla brytyjskiej odmiany języka. Praca zawiera część teoretyczną dotyczącą przekładu audiowizualnego i różnic między wersją lektorską a napisową, z odniesieniem do wytycznych platformy Netflix. W części analitycznej autorka klasyfikuje przykłady użycia slangu na podstawie stopnia trudności i tematyki (słownictwo związane z. pubami, policją, wyzwiska, określenia na osoby romskie). W analizie wykorzystano również źródła internetowe i słowniki, ze względu na brak obecności wielu wyrażeń slangowych w tradycyjnych zasobach leksykograficznych. Praca kończy się podsumowaniem przyjętych strategii tłumaczeniowych oraz oceną ich skuteczności.

This thesis focuses on the challenges of translating the British variety of the English language, with particular emphasis on the translation of slang in the TV series Peaky Blinders. British English differs from other language variants not only lexically and grammatically, but also phonetically and culturally. Translators face challenges such as idiomatic expressions, regional pronunciation differences (e.g., Black Country or Brummie accents), as well as the need to convey social and cultural context into the target language. One of the most demanding tasks is translating slang, which is informal, dynamic, and strongly tied to the identity of specific social groups. The aim of this study is to analyse how translators of the Polish voice-over and subtitle versions of the first season of Peaky Blinders handled the rendering of slang expressions and features characteristic of British English. The theoretical section discusses audiovisual translation and the differences between the voice-over and subtitle techniques, including a review of Netflix's translation guidelines. The analytical part categorizes slang examples based on their complexity and thematic domains (e.g., vocabulary related do pubs, police, insults, Romani references). Due to the lack of many slang expressions in traditional lexicographic resources, the analysis also draws on online sources and various dictionaries. The thesis concludes with a summary of the translation strategies used and an evaluation of their effectiveness.
