„The Americans” by Robert Frank: America’s ‘Golden Age’ Through the Lens of an Immigrant

W rzeczywistości jednak obraz ten odnosiłsię głównie do uprzywilejowanych przedstawicieli klasy średniej i wyższej, dla którychproblemy takie jak rasizm, uprzedmiotowienie kobiet czy rozwarstwienie społecznepozostawały niewidoczne. Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest analizie wybranych fotografii zalbumu „The Americans” autorstwa Roberta Franka, stanowiących krytykę wspomnianychkwestii społecznych. Zawiera ona informacje na temat biografii i stylu fotograficznego artysty,kontekstu historyczno-społecznego dekady lat 50. XX wieku, krótką historię fotografii ulicznej,charakterystykę albumu oraz analizę wizualno-kontekstową wybranych z niego fotografii.Celem pracy jest ukazanie, w jaki sposób Frank za pomocą medium fotografii obnażałproblemy ukryte pod pozornie idealnym wizerunkiem powojennej Ameryki.

The 1950s in the history of the United States are often perceived as a decade of prosperityand time when American Dream came true. However, in reality this image mainly referred toprivileged representatives of the middle and upper classes, for whom issues such as racism, theobjectification of women, and social stratification remained largely invisible. This thesis isdevoted to the analysis of selected photographs from The Americans by Robert Frank, whichserve as a critique of the aforementioned social issues. It includes information on the artist’sbiography and his photographic style, the historical and social context of the 1950s, a briefhistory of street photography, a characteristic of the album, and finally, the analysis of selectedphotographs. The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate how Frank used the medium ofphotography to expose the problems hidden beneath the seemingly ideal image of postwarAmerica.
