Parents' religious affiliation and the upbringing of children – a case study of Catholic and Pentecostal families

Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej było zbadanie wpływu wyznania rodziców na sposób wychowania dzieci, z uwzględnieniem porównania dwóch wyznań chrześcijańskich – katolickiego i zielonoświątkowego. Analiza opierała się na perspektywie socjologicznej, a jej podstawę stanowiły badania jakościowe. Aby zbadać wpływ wiary rodziców skupiono się na posiadanym kapitale społecznym oraz kulturowym w kontekście religijnym. Praca koncentruje się na takich aspektach, jak: autorytet rodzicielski, rola modlitwy i praktyk religijnych w życiu codziennym, wartości moralne przekazywane dzieciom, wykorzystywane zasoby religijne oraz przynależność do wspólnoty religijnej. W części empirycznej przeprowadzono wywiady pogłębione z przedstawicielami obu grup wyznaniowych – rodzicami wychowującymi dzieci w duchu swojej wiary. Analiza odpowiedzi ujawniła zarówno podobieństwa (np. nacisk na praktyki religijne oraz istotę przynależności do wspólnoty), jak i znaczące różnice – m.in w posiadanych symbolach religijnych, czy podejścia dzieci do uczestnictwa w Mszach Św. lub nabożeństwach. Wyniki badań pokazują, że religijność rodziców odgrywa istotną rolę w procesie wychowawczym i wpływa na kształtowanie tożsamości dziecka, jego system wartości oraz postawy społeczne. Jednocześnie ukazują złożoność relacji między religią a wychowaniem, zależną nie tylko od wyznania, ale także od indywidualnych przekonań, doświadczeń i kontekstu kulturowego.

The objective of this bachelor’s thesis is to investigate the impact of parents’ religious affiliation on child-rearing practices, with a particular emphasis on comparing two Christian denominations: Catholicism and Pentecostalism. The analysis was conducted from a sociological perspective and was based on qualitative research methods. In order to explore the influence of parental faith, the study focused on the concept of religiously grounded social and cultural capital. Core areas of interest included parental authority, the role of prayer and religious rituals in everyday life, the moral values imparted to children, the use of religious resources, and the sense of belonging to a religious community. The empirical part of the study involved conducting in-depth interviews with members of both denominational groups—parents raising their children in accordance with their religious convictions. The analysis of the collected data revealed both similarities (such as the emphasis on religious practices and the importance of community belonging) and notable differences, including the use of religious symbols and children’s attitudes toward participation in religious services, such as Mass or services. The findings suggest that parental religiosity plays a significant role in the educational and developmental processes of children, shaping their identity, value systems, and social attitudes. At the same time, the study highlights the multifaceted and context-dependent nature of the relationship between religion and parenting—one that is influenced not only by denominational affiliation, but also by individual beliefs, lived experiences, and the broader cultural environment.
