Jehovah's Witnesses: doctrine and praxis. Anthropological reconnaissance

Celem tej pracy jest pokazanie różnych kontekstów, przełożeń i napięć względem sfery doktryny i jej wykonań w perspektywie antropologii kulturowej/społecznej, które zaobserwowałem u Świadków Jehowy. Materiał, na którym praca się opiera został zebrany poprzez zagłębienie się w trzech rzeczywistościach. Pierwszą z nich była próba przeprowadzenia terenowych badań etnograficznych w jednym z krakowskich zborów tego wyznania. Drugą była przestrzeń internetowych dyskursów, z dużym naciskiem na grupy tematyczne obecnych i byłych Świadków na platformie FaceBook. Trzecią natomiast nazwałbym analizą materiałów zastanych organizacji, dostępnych głównie na jednej stronie o nazwie JW.ORG. Główny temat pracy jest raczej klamrą spinającą trzy bloki tematyczne, które stanowią część merytoryczną pracy. Pierwszy blok nazywa się zasłoną i skupia się na wytwarzaniu wizerunku w tej religii, opowiada on ponadto o problemach jakie napotkałem w czasie badań oraz jak sobie z nimi poradziłem. Drugi blok nosi nazwę kontestacji i opowiada o tym zjawisku zarówno w perspektywie obecnych jak i byłych Świadków. Ostatnia część nazywa się eschatologią gdzie zwrócę się ku wyobrażeniom nie tylko o przyszłości, ale też o czasie minionym. Partykularności Świadków Jehowy, które można by streścić nazwami trzech omawianych bloków moim zdaniem są wyjątkowo cenne do opisania w sposób antropologiczny. Ta optyka jest potrzebna zwłaszcza w świetle, gdzie niemała część wydawnictw naukowych i publicystycznych ma charakter polemizujący czy otwarcie anty-świadkowski.

The aim of this work is to present various contexts, interpretations and tensions related to the sphere of doctrine and its executions from the perspective of cultural/social anthropology, as I observed them among Jehovah’s Witnesses. The material on which this thesis is based was gathered by delving into three different realities. The first of these was an attempt to conduct ethnographic fieldwork in one of the Kraków congregations of this denomination. The second was the space of online discourses, with a strong focus on thematic groups of current and former Witnesses on the Facebook platform. The third, I would describe as an analysis of the organization's existing materials, mainly available on a website called JW.ORG. The main theme of the thesis functions more as a framework that connects three thematic blocks, which constitute the substantive part of the work. The first block is called “the veil” ("zasłona" in the original text) and focuses on the production of image within this religion; it also discusses the challenges I encountered during the research and how I dealt with them. The second block is titled “contestation” (kontestacja in the original text) and examines this phenomenon from the perspectives of both current and former Witnesses. The final part is called “eschatology,” (eschatologia in the original text) where I turn toward conceptions not only of the future but also of the past.The particularities of Jehovah’s Witnesses —which can be summarized by the titles of the three discussed blocks—are, in my opinion, especially valuable to describe from an anthropological standpoint. This perspective is particularly necessary given that a significant portion of academic and journalistic publications on the subject tend to be polemical or openly anti-Witness.
