The Women of the Medici Family on the Background of the Family's History in the 15th and Early 16th Century

Praca licencjacka ma na celu ukazanie roli, jaką odgrywały kobiety w rodzie Medyceuszy w XV i początkach XVI wieku. Rozdział pierwszy pracy skupia się na historii rodu Medyceuszy we wskazanym okresie. Rozdział drugi jest poświęcony położeniu kobiety i małżeństwom w renesansowej Florencji, a także mechanizmom wpływów kobiet na sferę publiczną. Rozdziały trzeci i czwarty opowiadają historie kobiet z rodu zaczynając od pokolenia Giovanniego di Bicci de’ Medici i kończąc na pokoleniu córek Wawrzyńca Wspaniałego. Podstawowymi źródłami na których opiera się praca są kroniki współczesnych historyków włoskich oraz przede wszystkim zachowana korespondencja członkiń rodu. Praca pokazuje ewolucję polityki matrymonialnej Medyceuszy w zależności od zmiany pozycji rodu na włoskiej arenie politycznej. Dowodzi również, że kobiety Medyceuszy zajmowały w rodzinie ważną i prestiżową pozycję oraz aktywnie działały w jej interesie, nie wychodząc jednak poza granicy tradycyjnych żeńskich ról.

The aim of the bachelor's thesis is to show the role played by women in the Medici family in the 15th and early 16th centuries. The first chapter of the thesis focuses on the history of the Medici family during the indicated period. The second chapter is dedicated to the position of women and to the question of marriage in Renaissance Florence, as well as to the mechanisms of women's influence in the public sphere. Chapters three and four tell the stories of the Medici women, starting with the generation of Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici and ending with the daughters of Lorenzo the Magnificent. The thesis uses the primary sources such as chronicles of contemporary Italian historians and, above all, the preserved correspondence of female members of the family. The thesis shows the evolution of the Medici's matrimonial policy depending on the change in the family's position in the Italian political arena. It also proves that Medici women held an important and prestigious position inside the family and acted actively in its interest, staying inside the boundaries of traditional female roles.
