The image of a woman presented in Imre Madách’s poetic drama “The Tragedy of Man”

Praca licencjacka koncentruje się na analizie postaci Ewy w Tragedii człowieka autorstwa Imre Madácha. Celem analizy jest ukazanie wielowymiarowości tej bohaterki. Przedstawienie jej pozytywnych cech, takich jak wrażliwość, lojalność wobec wyższych idei czy duchowe wsparcie dla Adama, jak i negatywnych, przejawiających się w m.in materializm, zagubienie, pustość. Ewa została przedstawiona nie tylko jako kobieta, ale również jako symbol – ucieleśnienie idei, nadziei oraz dążenia do sensu życia. W pracy uwzględniono także kontekst biograficzny twórcy. Życie Imre Madácha oraz jego relacje z kobietami – w szczególności z jego żoną oraz matką – miały bardzo duży wpływ na obraz Ewy i pozwalają lepiej zrozumieć nadawane jej cechy i role. Nie bez znaczenia pozostaje również kontekst epoki romantyzmu, w której dzieło powstawało. Romantyczne idee, takie jak kult jednostki, duchowość czy pesymizm emocjonalny, odcisnęły piętno na całej strukturze dramatu. Romantyzm jako tło literackie i ideowe nadaj postaci Ewy dodatkową głębie i symboliczny wymiar.W ramach pracy przeprowadzona została szczegółowa analiza wybranych scen dramatu, które w sposób szczególnie wyrazisty ukazują wewnętrzną dwoistość Ewy. Jej dobroć, empatia, siła duchowa zestawiona została ze słabością, brakiem wyższych celów, materializmem oraz zdradą. Zestawienie tych fragmentów pozwoliło na pogłębioną refleksję nad tym, czy Ewa jaki się jako klasyczna bohaterka dramatu, czy może momentami przybiera cechy antybohaterki.

The bachelor's thesis focuses on the analysis of the character of Eve in The Tragedy of Man by Imre Madách. The aim of the analysis is to present the multidimensional nature of this character – highlighting both her positive traits, such as sensitivity, loyalty to higher ideals, and spiritual support for Adam, as well as her negative aspects, manifested in materialism, confusion, and inner emptiness. Eve is portrayed not only as a woman, but also as a symbol — an embodiment of ideas, hope, and the human pursuit of meaning. The thesis also considers the biographical context of the author. The life of Imre Madách and his relationships with women – particularly with his wife and mother – had a significant influence on the portrayal of Eve and help to better understand the traits and roles assigned to her. Equally important is the context of the Romantic era in which the work was created. Romantic ideas such as the cult of the individual, spirituality, and emotional pessimism left a distinct mark on the entire structure of the drama. Romanticism, as both a literary and ideological backdrop, gives Eve additional depth and symbolic dimension. As part of the research, a detailed analysis of selected scenes from the drama was conducted, especially those that clearly reveal Eve’s internal duality. Her kindness, empathy, and spiritual strength are contrasted with weakness, lack of higher purpose, materialism, and betrayal. The juxtaposition of these elements allowed for a deeper reflection on whether Eve should be seen as a classic heroine of the drama, or whether she at times takes on the traits of an antiheroine.
